WS > FS all day long. It's more space, how you use it is up to you. If it's really so bad then why do so many people setup such elaborate eyefinity rigs with 3 monitors side-by-side which in essence gives you a super WS display? For movies & gaming WS hands FS it's butt all day long. For work it gives you a much bigger desktop / work area for you to have multiple apps/programs up. I had been rocking a 19" FS LCD for nearly 10 years and recently upgraded to a 24" WS LCD for my system..way better is the understatement of the decade.

Actually when you get into 1200 vertical lines whole pages do fit on screen. Even two side by side. 19x12 are just a like a 4:3 16x12 with a free 300 horizontal lines. It's the 1080s that are stupid. It's the laptops with one inch top and bottom bezels that are stupid. My T60 with IPS 16x12 screen is much much larger than T520. Today most laptops are just portable DVD players vs decent work computers.

Yeah, I stopped buying laptops when they went to 16x9. Still have my 1920x1200 Dell.

How you use it is not always up to you, though. Take MS Office, for example. Microsoft has decided that you must use valuable vertical space for the ribbon and other editing features, and that their sidebars should mostly be useless and annoying. Most software, in fact, still uses vertical space for menus and toolbars, despite users have much more room on the sides for them.

You generally have to get into applications truly designed for productivity (AutoCAD comes to mind, and most IDEs) to be able to make very good use of the side space instead of the top.

I'll bet it's well under 1% of ATOT members that regularly visit the VC&G subforum--not many at all.

Agree that 1920x1200 is boss. I also really like 2560x1600 a lot too, but can't afford one, lol. I'm saddened by the apparent move to 2560x1440 though.

Ribbon shmibbon - ribbon is crap just like W8 Metro which is why I use Office 2003. Office '03 uses the same file/edit/tools toolbar since the 80s before W95. Besides the familiar layout of the menus and toolbars, another advantage is just how editable and customizable it is -- where you want the toolbars, how big, which toolbars you want to see, even what items you want on them.

Programs that FORCE you to waste screen space, aren't flexible or customizable or have poor layouts should be evaluated as such -- those items can often negate the benefits of the underlying program you are using.

And regardless, WS is IT for media and gaming, WS is the future, this is why WS is hardcoded into HD specs -- ie 1080p is 1920x1080 a WS format, 720p is 1280x720, a WS format, etc. Watching WS material on a FS display is painful, however FS material on a WS display is no big deal. As TV and computers are converging the WS spec was the obvious choice. Even with productivity software it's great as you have a much bigger desktop to work with. If the program was meant to be run in a FS window no biggie, run it in FS and then you can have other apps in the background. Notice how most widgets/metro apps are on the left and right sides of the screen?

I use WS at work and home and even with apps that run native FS it's no big deal as then you have more desktop for companion apps/programs. Less alt-tabbing is great.
