man fatally shot a woman decorating for a children’s Christmas party at a tiny church hall and killed two men elsewhere in a rural central Pennsylvania township Friday before he was fatally shot in a gunfight with state troopers.

With this story combined with last weeks, more and more pressure is going to build up to enact new gun control laws. We all know gun homicides are going to keep happening consistently every week and the media will put their focus reporting them more actively than usual.

There is no doubt it will happen too, we are talking about the same population that tolerated signing the NDAA, the Patriot Act, and a false war.

The Mayans didn't want the resulting political theater to stain their calendar, amiright?

Go read a weekend report from Chicago.

Shameful as the Chicago homicide rate is, they are averaging considerably fewer than 4 violent deaths per day.

Interestingly this shooting occurred while Wayne LaPierre was onstage this morning.

Yawn.

I don't roll out of bed for less than 15 bodies anymore.

Why would I want to do that? It might challenge my view that white, gun owning Republicans are the cause of all evil in society.

If it is Republican's why are all the shootings this year in blue states

Colorado, Oregon, Connecticut, Pennsylvania.

And given liberals repeatedly whining about red states receiving more welfare meaning that it is Republican's that suck down welfare, I think we can fairly say that if a shooting happens in a blue state it was by a Democrat

It's arguable that the good ol' boy network that exists in many red states helps keep the crazies in check.

If there is one country in the world that is a poster child of the NRA armed citizen argument, that country is Afghanistan and the Taliban.

And failing that, we can also cite Mexico and its friendly and patriotic narco terrorists, paragon of virtue free enterprise advocates who see a social need and fulfill it.

Roughly speaking, there are about the same time of cars as guns in the US and about the same number of gun deaths as automobile deaths. So both cars and guns are reasonably fatal to Americans, except cars are intensely regulated for safety reasons. Likely as a result, car related deaths are at their lowest point since 1950, despite vastly more cars on the road. Of course that's largely done not through limiting access to vehicles, but designing them to be safer in accidents and creating better designed systems to avoid accidents or lessen their severity. Assuming car safety technology gets better, and there isn't a corresponding change to gun violence, I'd expect guns to surpass cars in terms of number of Americans killed at some point.

All the shootings? Really?

Looking at gun deaths by state suggests there is basically no connection between red vs blue or liberal vs conservative gun laws and gun deaths. Connecticut has slightly over 1/3 the gun homicide rate per capita of gun happy Texas, for instance (all 4 states you mentioned have fewer than Texas). My very liberal state of Maryland is number 2 in gun homicides...following super red Louisiana. Following that are Mississippi and California. On the other hand, the safest 3 states in terms of gun homicides are Hawaii, Vermont and New Hampshire...and Wyoming at number 4.

Basically there is no obvious political connection I can see...which hurts the arguments on both sides.

The only argument I see working is that it is a cultural thing, and has nothing to do with laws. Might as well adopt laws of the most gun-friendly states. (I hope this happens)

What we need is adequate car control. Cars need speed limiters on them to prevent them from driving faster than the fastest posted speed in the state in which they are registered. No one NEEDS a car that can go above the speed limit.

Cars are designed, on purpose, to enable the driver to use the car illegally and thereby put themselves and many innocent people at risk of death or being maimed. We need to put an end to such idiocy.

Car control is what we need.
