4 GB of RAM (4X 1024) with my X2 4800+, will it run well?

I am wondering if i should get 4GB of RAM to complement my new AMD X2 4800+ processor..the ram that i am getting is the 2GB OCZ Platinum 3200EL kit...

i've heard lots of stories that the system won't run stable with 4 sticks of RAM, or you have to sacrifice timing and run at 2T OR face serious problems overclocking...anyone here got any experience?

the motherboard i am getting is the DFI version of the ATI crossfire motherboard....

Which isn't out, nor do you even know how it will perform. Smart move there

4gig is fine, however what in the world are you going to be doing that needs that much memory. 2gig is about all anyone will need for a while unless you are doing high end CAD, Photoshop and what not.

The system will run fine with 4 sticks. It used to lower the clock down to 333 however that is fixed. It does still lower the Command Rate to 2T, however you would be hard pressed to find a difference over 1%.

thanks gamingphreek for the reply....

well yah..the Crossfire mobo isn't out lol..but how about DFI's track record in handling large amount of RAM?

The reason i am getting this much RAM is because i do alot of photoshop and video editing, the more the merrier.

DFI has no track record with RAM. I dont know what you have heard, but it isn't true.

I wouldn't hold out for for a Crossfire board. There is no word when they are going to be out or anything. I would get an Nforce 4 board, and if you REALLY want to then switch to the ATI when it is reviewed and what not.

If you say so about the RAM. YOu have a 64bit processor, and i assume you will be running XP-64 so jam as much RAM in as you want, but 4 is even overkill.

no, i didn't mean if DFI had any "bad" track record with RAM lol...what i meant is if you have any experience with DFI motherboards and how well it handles large amount of memory like 4GB....

THe motherboard on an A64 has nothing to do with how much memory it can handle. As long as there is an unpopulated bank you can put the memory in there. DFI handles large memory no better than any other manufacturer.

Remember A64 has an on-die memory controller.

Additionally, i never meant that they had a bad record. They have no record. Like i said earlier as long as there is an unpopulated bank, the motherboard will do fine.

It will run ayt 2T, just like every other amount of RAM when all 4 slots are filled. Nothing you can do about it. Seriously though, 4GB is probably overkill for anything you are doing (even photoshop and video). Maybe try 2GB and if you do notice that you are swapping alot, then upgrade to 4. There will be a small performance hit going to 2T, but you have no idea if you really need 4 GB to make up for it.

Another good reason to stick with nf4 is that it has been out for a very long time so whatever problems there might have been are most likely fixed.

OCZ platinum EL only runs at 2-3-2-5 not 2-2-2-5, FYI.

But here's a bote for that ram, it's excellent!

Since I have a UltraD & the SLI-DR version's , I can test your X2 & 4 gigs of ram...
I'll use RH ES 4.0 i386 & AMD64 versions & WinXP to see what happens..

It will ofcourse take some time, I'd est. about 1.5yrs .. (to do a good job).

The RAM will run at full speed as long as it is:

1. Rev. E processor
2. Venice, or San Diego
3. Dual Core

As all of these feature the updated memory controller.

However it will change the COmmand Rate to 2T (1-3% performance delta). Any board will do that. I think 1 or 2 high end 955X boards managed 1T with banks loaded though.

And now I'm realizing that 2GB may not be enough if I want to run VMWare and Photoshop at the same time... Oh, how I hate upgrading (no, how I hate the desire to upgrade again when I have no money because I just upgraded last month).

The older platinum rev2 based on the samsung TCCD runs 2-2-2-5 or even 1.5-2-2-5, but its getting harder and harder to find. The new rev2 has TCC5 I believe

You tell me a board that supports CAS 1.5. Additionally i have never heard of TCCD making it that low.

DLerium is correct. 1 Gig sticks will not have as good latencies as 512mb sticks.

That's what everyone said about 1gb about 3-4 months ago.

No. 1 gig became the unofficial standard about a year ago.

4gig will not be the standard for quite a while. 2 Gig (for the avg gamer/user) is just barely becoming prevelant now.
