4 GB RAM sticks

hi...

i do a lot of rendering and thus need a lot of ram. i already grew out of 4 gigs (win xp 64)

(eg. ps2-5300 (667) )

i wonder if people around here actually use 4 GB ram sticks. (no 2x2 or 4x1 ..)


are there any limitations (except max memory of the mobo itself)? compatibility issues ?

There will be compatibility issues with motherboards/chipsets (as you hint at). Also, DDR2 at 4 GB stick densities is very expensive I believe... I don't really think anyone has 4 GB DDR2 sticks right now. Also, the timings may be a bit loose.

That's a whopping $71.87/GB...
Just for comparison you can get 8 GB (4x2GB) of the same type of DDR2-800 G.Skill ram for under $180 I think: $22/GB

hmm... so it's a lot cheaper to just buy a better mobo with more slots and fill them up with kits of 2GB ram...

what's the technical problem with timings ? slowdown ?

Well, #1 is availability. That link to newegg was the only 4 GB density sticks I could find on newegg. And the timings are 6-6-6-18 at DDR2-800, which aren't too great.

There is a lot more to rendering than simply the amount of memory you have. What application are you using to render and what is the rest of your system specifications?

For rendering I moved to Tyan boards.
They easily accommodate large amounts of ram.
Currently using 16GB on Tyan S5376

The boards are costly but with dual cpu sockets you can put 8 cores on a board.
Well worth it.

At least some of the upcoming P45-based boards will support 4GB dimms (for up to 16GB total).

I can't find any desktop motherboards that have more than 4 ram slots.

4 slots x 4GB= 16GB.
