4 Port Broadband Router & 2 USB Ethernet + "Zero configuration"

This is my first post, so take it easy on me..

I've been reading AnandTech for sometimes now, and benefited from deals I found in here, so here is a little contribute to Anandtech.

Tigerdirect is selling this set of internet broadband router with 4 port switch and 2 USB ethernet adapters for $99.99. I know if we go out and buy a router with built-in switchs and USB adaptors, the price will come out about the same, and may be cheaper. But, I still consider it's a HOT deal if "Zero configuration" from the website is true. I don't know about anybody else, but I have been having problems with my self-configured network, at times I needed to restart my router [Netgear RT114] to get some of my computers back on internet. I've already updated the latest bios, but still... anyway, there may be a lot of other things I missed while configuring my network.

Bottom line is, if this Zero configuration is working, this is going save me a lot of hassel. If there is a coupon out there somewhere, this can be a hotter deal.

I think I am going to try it out and see.. will keep you updated

I don't know what you think Zero Configuration is. All they are saying is that it has a DHCP server built in and if your computers on the network are set to DHCP then you don't have to configure anything on each computer.

I hate to break it to you but all routers that I know of support this. You will still have to configure the router for your ISP. That means you will still have to log into the router and setup up all the options for your ISP.

Your netgear router had a DHCP server built in.

Zero configuration might be referring to Universal plug and play support for NAT traversal. Most of the newer routers support this with a BIOS upgrade. Then again, this is only useful if your OS supports it (i.e. Windows XP or ME) and if the application supports it (i.e. MSN messenger).

I see what you are talking about. I guess if you don't want to know what ports are being opened up this is a good idea.

I was a little skeptical about the Zero Configuration thing as well, so I called up Tigerdirect and asked about the difference between this router and other routers on the market. And, apparently, Zero Configuration means something else.

I was told this kit gurantees 3 minute installation on the box. The sales guy told me this router will automatically configures to my ISP without me actually going into the router and setup up all the options manually.

Can this be true ?

At home, I have Charter's Pipeline (cable), which took me about 30 minutes to setup my router (after going thru few websites teaching people how to setup routers).

I will order a set and try it out at a friend's office, since they are in desperate need to share their Pac Bell DSL service, which I heard it's a nightmare to even think of using routers.

IF you REALLY had "been reading AnandTech for sometimes now" you should know about Tigerdirect and their notorious missrepresentaion of items.

There have been many many threads about them and bottom line is that they lie and have a bad CS and are generally a crook company. Many official investigations have been launched against them, they had to pay quite some sums because of that.
Of course THEY won't pay for that, it is dum and uneducated people who still purchase from them, THEY pay for it.

As with anything comming from tigerdirect, this is ICE COLD.

I have purchased a few things from them before (Thanks to Anandtech HOT DEALS forum), and although they don't have the fastest shipping, they did send my purchases correctly.

I guess I did not have to return anything, so I did not get to experience their bad CS.
