Cut the back of my hand on some broken glass today. You could see he blood vessels and everything else but wasn't super deep but you could see all the stuff inside and since it was glass it was a nice clean cut. They injected the stuff to numb it, tetanus shot, and 4 stitches cost $452. I was like WTF!!! I don't have insurance as my job doesn't offer it and just recently got my job so haven't gotten any yet. I didn't even go to a hospital. It was just urgent care.

I'm hoping the day comes quickly when robots can do this stuff safely and cheaply. No offense to those in the medical profession, but getting treated for stuff like this should not cost an arm and a leg.

Should have done it yourself or hired a homeless person to do it for a waffle house all-star breakfast.

You got some medicine, some time in a room in the clinic, and some labor from multiple clinic staff. Sounds reasonable.

Glad I live in Canada. I would not be able to afford that right now if something happened to me. Been doing lot of work around the house so the chances of getting hurt are way higher for me right now, too.

Ya, that seems cheap. But then, I would have wrapped it in paper towels and duct tape.

Eight stitches in mine from broken glass cost $1500, and some have to pay more than that. Feel lucky. If you went to the emergency room, you'd be billed by the hospital as well as for the doctor's services.

I didn't have insurance either, but I complained and asked why it was so expensive, and the hospital cut their bill in half (from $1k to $500.)

If you could keep this up for 300 pages I'd buy your book

No, that's not a reasonable cost at all.

I don't think you're in touch with the reality of how much things cost.

Just because some countries move to government provided health insurance doesn't mean someone isn't paying for it. You're just shifting the burden from the individual to the community.

You should have posted here BEFORE you blew good money on a doctor.

Many years ago I was saving up money for a Plextor DVD burner (back when they were really expensive) and the morning I was going to go get it I broke my big toe tripping over some presents under the Christmas tree.

Thinking fast, I posted here, and within a few hours I had absolutely SOLID medical advice from someone that used to date a premed student. As a bonus he also told me how to keep an eye out for gangrene.

To make a long story short, I taped up my own big toe (all a doctor could have done for me anyways) and limped my way to Fry's and got that DVD burner.

You just paid for 2 deadbeats to have their hands stitched up.

I mean really, it was maybe $30 in materials, and $100 for the staff's time, ~25% for admin costs... The rest is profit to pay for the non-paying ER patients.

For future reference if it is a very clean cut made by a knife or glass, and not a tear, you can easily fix it yourself. Simply wash the cut with water and then hydrogen peroxide, dry off, and tape shut. You can use regular medical tape or get those special reinforced strips, it just depends on where you cut yourself. A clean cut should at least seal itself in a day or two and then you just have to be careful while it fully heals if you want to remove the tape....or leave it in place.

I cut all eight of my finger tips almost to the bone on a sharp piece of sheet metal once, it was like I had little flaps of finger hanging down. I cleaned them, taped them, and in a couple days was able to remove the tape. This was about 13 years ago....I have no scars and it cost me nada since I already had the tape.

What are you talking about? The cost of the labor isn't exactly cheap, you don't want just anybody stitching you up. Not to mention the cost of good medical supplies.

$450 to avoid longterm pain, problems with healing, or massive infection is pretty reasonable.

this is why the idea of capitalistic health care doesn't work. its not like you could have gone around shopping for a lower price all day. the controls on price of regular consumer practices are nonexistent for healthcare. when you need it they got you by the balls.

You can shop around, you just need to do it before you're in an emergency. You pick your insurance and then you'll know where to go and exactly how much you'll pay if you bother to read your insurance documents.

And you somehow think that is expensive? And why the fuck don't you have insurance? You choose to not have insurance, so pay for your care. You CHOOSE not have insurance, so deal with the consequences of your CHOICE.

How about this? I'll stitch you up for 200 bucks.

So $450 for a syringe, its contents, some string, and ~15 mins of labor is reasonable?

Thats only $1800 an hour.
