i wonder if these are even alkaline batteries. i only use nimh and alkalines now. for alkalines i've been using kirkland signature and duracell, both very good brands. too bad costco doesnt carry energizer or i'd use them too.

Some of the CompUSAs still have those 'Red Cell' Alkaline batteries near the checkout. They're $10 for a 40 pack. I haven't seen the 'buy one got one free' sales on them lately though. Ikea also sells a 10 pack of AA Alkalines for $2 if you're near one.

Just as an FYI...Ikea sells 10-packs of AA batteries for $1.99. that is 50 batteries for $9.95 for the mathmatically challenged. They aren't top of the line, but they generally suit my needs. Since my kids often leave their toys on until the batteries die, anyway, they are good for those and they work fine in my cordless mustache trimmer, Colgate toothbrush, pager, etc.

If you have an IKEA nearby, it's worth a stop to pick them up. I checked their website, and they don't seem to be available there, unfortunately.

Not to crap too badly on this, but Rayovac batteries have about the shortest working life of any I've ever tried.

Heavy Duty (Carbon Zinc) batteries are for low drain or infrequently used devices. So they're good enough for clocks, remotes, etc. But not good for CD players, digital cameras, etc.

I've got some Rayovac batteries that are three years old and are finally dying. Just replaced all of them with the 40 pack from CompUSA.

What's amazing is the economies of scale. Last year, I had read a translated Chinese article which indicated that in mainland China, the heavy duty batteries sell for as low as 5 cents each battery (over there of course). So, a 40-pak would sell for 40x5 --> $2.00
