Yes and yes.The pharmacist only got in trouble because he killed the one guy twenty minutes after he had already been shot. Had he unloaded the entire gun within the first several seconds he'd be free and heralded.
EDIT: But of course, this is Canada, where you are likely correct.
This is natural in a society where self-defence and the ability to do so are chastised. Of course, one store owner with a gun might not scare away 50 bastards if any of them are carrying as well, but it has to start somewhere. That, or let the police actually shoot such mobs on sight.

This is really the worst kind of peer group pressure. It seems like a stunt or a dare, but it could have become deadly. So, has anyone here participated in a flashmob type activity? The mentality is the same...let's all get together and do something outrageous.

Profit.
It's not an issue of guns or self defence. It's a much more basic social problem. These issues don't even arise in most other western democracies where guns are MUCH harder to get a hold of. And many of these countries also have large immigrant and black populations. See Germany and France as examples. They certainly have problems with racism and internal conflicts but armed robbery and gun violence is MUCH MUCH rarer than in the US. It's a problem with modern American culture. And yes I'm sure I'll get flamed for saying this but it's the truth.
