You may end up less than a year or so down the road and wonder if 400Gigs is not enough, but I don't think you'll ever worry about too much.. only if you have to back it all up

Years ago I was told my 130Meg drive was so big that I probably would never use all the space, but that has changed a long while ago and now you wouldn't even be able install Windows on that.

What you could always do is, stay with the 400. Then when prices drop a little, get 2 more, and put them in a RAID5. That way, all of your "shows" will be backed up. If you use a hardware based RAID, I don't think you can normaly go from a 1 to a 5, but that might just be the cards I have used.

Trust me, you can never have enough hard drive space. When you create images of all your games, have alot of shows on your HD, it really starts adding up. I have 2x200gb in RAID0 (don't flame me) and sure, it's still not full, but it's certainly getting there.

wouldn't that be twice as likely to loose at least half of your data?

Less likely to lose is all in one go though.

I think he means 2x200 for RAID 1?

Then you lose half your storage. If I was worried about data loss, I'd certainly get all my critical data on some sort of disk mirroring solution.

nothing is ever too big. file sizes are getting bigger and bigger so 400GB's of today will be our equivalent of 100GB in a few years

400GB can store 762 CDs in FLAC format.
42 raw dual-layer DVD movies / PC Games
162 movies compressed to high quality/2.35GB

While a Album of music wont really change because the next gen formats offer nothing, Video will certainly hold true to the ideal. 25GB per single layer HD movie drops your capacity to 15 movies.

Look at my sig Im getting to the point where not very long from now I might need to put in more. After "backing up" all my movies, ripping my games so I will never have to put a cd in again, and verious other things I install. Only downside is backing up. I have a 140GB wich i use to back up certain things.

If it's free, there's no such thing as "too big". Maybe "too expensive" if you're buying it yourself, but since it was free...

Think about this 400gb can store 8 HDTV movies (assuming 50GB blue ray) thats nothing. If you want a practical use for more space make some Rainbow Tables which will allow you crack almost all windows XP passwords in a few minutes.

If I ever need more space, I'll probably grab a small PCI-X adapter, and do two 400gb hds to fill my enclosures... But I doubt I'll need any more room for a good while. But the idea of having the ability to do so is the nice part.

People always think they won't be able to fill it up. I have a 300GB Maxtor and I filled it up quite nicely. I recently had to start backing things up to DVDs so I could make room for more things. I'd like to invest in 1TB like two 500GB Hitachis.
