if you don't want to mess with it, put it all the 2040 fund. those are fund of funds, so you'll be well diversified. expense ratio probably isn't horrible. right now, the fund will be a little more aggressive. as you get close to retirement, it will shift to be more conservative. eventually it turned into a fixed income fund. fidelity and john hancock have similar products.
