This will be the 4th year I've maxed out my Roth contributions. I put about an additional $10k/year into my 401k through work. I had planned on within another year or two starting to max out the 401k as well, but now I'm intrigued by the HSA thing. I only contribute enough to it currently to basically cover a years worth of out of pocket max if I do get sick, but now I'm thinking I should start maxing that out rather than maxing out my 401k first. Thoughts?

You can only contribute $3350 to an HSA, so do both if you can.

my 401K is down YOY, but up a bit YTD.
I've got a lot in a Russell small cap index fund, which has taken a pretty big hit.
I have a decent amount in an S&P 500 which is doing a bit better.
Then I have money in a mid cap index fund which took a hit.
Overall, I am down around 15% from peak, but, have recovered about 1/2 of the losses.

yeah max the HSA first. It's the best savings/investment account possible, and don't be drawing money out of there.

There is no time limit for when you have to claim health-related costs with an HSA (remember, this is not the same as one of those FSAs, which expire every year and the total value needs to spent, or is lost). Just pile up your receipts over several years (if you can) and pay yourself back with the HSA after several years of untaxed growth.
worth $1.

I'm jealous because I have amazing health coverage that only costs me $25/month, zero deductible, full coverage. So...no access to an HSA

Oh, and don't retire in two consecutive down years.

yeah, that helps, but it definitely depends. If you have enough in a brokerage account to live off of dividends and returns at @ that magic 4% rate, then it wouldn't make a difference. Dividends will still get paid at roughly the same value while the value of the actual shares crap out a bit. But they will recover, too.

But that's a big if, I guess (or not if you had been doing this stuff for quite some time already)
