Have a slower Plex and a Kenwood 72X POS CDRom which has been discontinued... just finished a consulting project and have some money to burn.

Based on my research, I'm picking up the Toshiba 16/48X DVD player. Next question is which 40X CDRW drive do I buy... LiteOn/Plex?

I know Plex is supposed to support Mt. Rainier at some point in the near future... haven't heard anything about LiteOn.

Recommendations? especially from folks that have had both.

Thanks mucho!

Wise choice, I just got the 40x Lite-On and it's great, even for the 1:1 copy's.

If you buy a lite on you will get a good drive.
However if you buy a plextor you will get a good drive that is far superior when it comes to reliability quality of burns, and when it comes to reading more cd formats. I have put in messed up CDRS, or different formatted cdrs into lite ons and cant copy anything. Y ou do the same with the plextor you will hav a perfect burn. Its just hte media burning wise that I have been looking for.

Thanks for the info. Anyone else?

Given how quickly some of this tech changes... I don't know if it makes sense for me to invest a lot of money in a CDRW. Just a few months ago we were @ 16X. So ~$130 foir a Plex is leaving the LiteOn sounding better and better @ $83.

FYI I also read a couple of back to back comparisons since my first post, LiteOn seems to win most of the time. Also the Product Page for the LiteOn40X indicates Rainier Support.

just so you know...Teac makes the fastest 40x CDRW drive currently available. Not to mention the 8MB buffer ;-)

And it's cheap too, but lite on is cheaper still.

Now that i think about it...40x drives are good, but where is the 40X media!? I can't find any and even Sony and Imation who both sell 40x CDR drives don't sell 40x media!

Where can i pickup some good quality 40x media online?

FYI these were the con's from CDRInfo's review of the Teac CDW540E

- Lower DAE performance than competition
- Low Packet-Writing reading performance
- Very bad CloneCD reading performance
- Cannot produce accurate SD2 backups
- Drive is noisy as the competition?

What is packet-writing reading? it's either reading or writing...

cloneCD is outdated

what is SD2?

Why is noise a con? If it's fast and works correctly then it's good. You shouldn't be listening to drives anyway...turn on some music.

And FYI: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=cdwriteresults.php3

P.S. Not trying to be malicious towards you, but i am pointing out some things that I see as irrelevant to a burner's quality. Since i use my DVD to record music and as long as the music is high quality I don't care if it takes 3 hours for a CD really. So DAE is not really a big deal.

lus the Teac CD-W540E has Mt Rainier support out of the box. forgot to mention that...and a new firmware supposedly helps some CD media problems that were experienced

cmdrdredd, no worries and no offense taken.

SD2 is a copy protection technology (SafeDisk 2... used in MOHAA for example). The other competing 40X products are able to deal with it. The TEAC cannot. DAE performance is important if you rip a fair number of CD's. Sure you can use another drive for it, but that's not the point if you have one of the latest and greated drives.

I agree, noise isn't a big deal. But your suggestion doesn't make too much sense if you burn CD's often.

CloneCD is not outdated, current version is 4.0... it is still the best 1:1 copy program out there. I suggest you post a question in the forums and see what the response is.

Supposedly, the new firmware 1.0c takes care of the DAE performance. Whether or not it addresses the other issues remains to be seen. I sent a PM to Ian, the guy that wrote the CDRLabs review. We will see what his response is. Here's the last paragraph in his review...

So is TEAC's CD-W540E for you? If you're looking for the drive with the fastest read speeds and lowest seek times out there, the CD-W540E probably is. I really can't say that its the fastest writer out there. It went neck and neck with the Plextor through out most of our tests and there was no clear winner. While we didn't include it in this review, the new ZS0A firmware for the LTR-40125S might just tip the scales in Lite-On's direction too. And then you also need to look at the media compatibility and the writing quality. As usual, the choice is up to you. You need to weigh the performance aspects and features that are important to you and go from there.

IMO Mt. Rainier support is just featureset marketing @ the moment. It's like saying a video card supports Pixel Shaders 1.4. The technology is there, but not utilized and won't be for a while. By the time it makes mainstream, most people (especially people that use this forum) will probably have bought 2 subsequent generations of products.

Jack head over to CDRInfo and look in the articles section, there is a piece that answers your question.

Mt rainier is a way to drag and drop burn a CDR/CDRw disk from the OS. Special formatting etc.

as far as safeDisk...why worry about it at all? unless you're a pirate or doing illegal stuff you shouldn't even have to bother with SD2 compatability.

Well I guess I'm a pirate on occasion.

From a non-pirate standpoint, when I lend games to buddies, I make a copy and keep the original. Some of my friends don't treat CD's as well as I do. I've gotten some games back and was unable to use them due to scratches etc...

*EDIT - Got a PM back from the guy that wrote the article. I guess LiteOn is releasing new firmware that will put it slightly above the TEAC (guess he has a beta) in terms of performance. He said, LiteOn first, TEAC second, Plexy third. Of course this is one man's opinion. But since he probably qualifies as someone that is well versed in the subject matter, I think I will probably follow his advice. Besides, the LiteOn is the cheapest @ $83.

Thanks for the info.

I currently own a Plextor and while I think its a great drive I would probably buy the LiteOn if I was buying a drive now. My reasoning is that because I have a Slot-Load Pioneer 16x DVD I NEVER use my plextor for Reads. I wish ALL drives were slot load!

The gotapex.com article picks the liteon above the plextor. I have 2 24x cdrw, a liteon and a plextor. I personally have less trouble with the lite on for some reason. Not that this is a good reason.... Plextor drives are always top notch as well.

Thanks for the info all. Been very edumacational... going to go with the LiteOn. Seems like it's the top choice, regardless of price. Follow that up with a Toshiba DVD and it should keep me for 6-9 months, until the next latest and greatest peripheral comes out.

IMO, the Imation discs are not the best quality, but they do fine for most applications. They don't overburn all that well, and my car CD player doesn't like them, but they are still ok.

TY discs (for instance, the Fujifilm 24x discs) work great for me, and they burn flawlessly at 40x in my Lite-On drive.

So, if you are looking for 40x capable discs, and you can't find 40x certified discs, the 24x Fuji's have worked great at 40x for me.
