We had many (10 or 11) sceptre 17" LCD monitors up here at work several years ago that every last one of them save one the backlight inverter died on after the warentee expired on. Each time it happened, it was more expensive to replce the inverter than it was to buy a brand new Dell 1701. Tossed the whole lot. Those monitors, like I said, were several years old tho, perhapse they make better LCD products now.

Wow! That's a $200 price drop from 3 months ago.

Post #2598 in the 42" Sceptre thread on AVSforum states: "This set will be a lot cheaper around Thanksgiving. There is a lot of overcapacity in the LCD business right now. According to CMO, all large lcd's will probably drop 20% by Christmas."

Any opinions as to which is the better deal and why?

Thank you all,

The Sceptre would be better since it can display 1080P which is higher resolution than the Philips. As to the quality of the monitor, I wouldn't know but since it's from Costco, it's covered by their warranty.

CostCo needs to open up in my area. There have been rumors about a big-name "big box" store looking into a new development zone, so hopefully it's them.

The Sceptre is better by a million miles.

ok, you answered the first part of my question, care to elaborate on the second part (other than the 1080i v. p which has been mentioned)?

Thanks,
Trout

My bad, I should have just said that the Sceptre is better by over a MILLION pixels, 1,024,512 to be exact.

Thats twice as many as the Phillips. More pixels = better picture quality, means a heck of a lot for LCD's.

How durable are the LCD TV's screen surface. We have a dying 35" CRT set that wife would love to replace with an LCD but my experience with the million fingerprints I cleaned off the glass of the TV from our 3 1/2 yr old and with the second child on the way in a month it becomes a factor.

there will be a film over the screen to protect it from glare, but it is succeptible to scratches. However, it's a LCD, hang the thing on the wall and out of the reach of the little one(s) and it will be fine.

I wouldn't count on it...all the LCD manufacturers except Samsung have cut back production (apparently samsung is seeing pretty decent sales of their products so they haven't cut back) so prices should stabilize soon.

The oversupply is maybe 3-4 weeks right now (like warehouses has a backlog of LCDs just sitting there) for the actual panels. I don't know how the translates to assembled units, but presumably once the panel prices go back up in about 4 weeks, the assembled unit prices will go up too.

So I don't really see it going much cheaper by Christmas.

Of course then again Samsung might throw it all off, who knows.

Another deal for Sceptre 37 is scheduled for the end of August. So does it mean another oversupply is coming in two months?

seems like you can get different answers depending on who you ask. i emailed costco.com maybe a year ago, and the rep told me there is no time limit on returns for tv, only a 6 months on desktops and laptops.

if in "a little extra" you mean double, then your right. If you think the quality will be better, well thats each man's decision.

Maybe each man's opinion, but facts speak for themselves. Chinese made electronics have a very poor track record. Japan and Taiwan made are much better quality. I am not talking image quality, I am talking "will it malfunction" quality. The Chinese are just awful at it.

Hmmm... I already have the Sceptre 37" which I paid $1600 + shipping for last year. How much difference would 5" make and is it worth the hassle? Do you guys think I can still take the 37" back in exchange for the 42" and does Costco refund shipping costs?

Do they even carry these TVs at any of the retail stores? I have never seen them on display...

One more question. Are there any universal remotes that work with this TV? I currently have it hooked up to my PC which has Logitech 5500 speakers and I ahve a Comcast Cable box. It would be nice to consolidate the 3 but no remote I have seen advertises the ability to work with Sceptre TVs.

I went into the Beaverton, OR Costco today and they didn't have any sceptre tv's. I saw the coupon for it though, something like 500 off. Came in the mail. I lean more towards plasmas when it comes to big-screens, however this seemed like a great deal. I was dissapointed that they didn't have it.
