I would say buy Korean or Taiwanese.

Low end Japanese products use chinese panels.
High end Japanese products use Korean panels.

Why pay extra for Japanese prodcut ?

Well, high end Japanese product still has better quality control and good non-digital
components like power transformer. But Taiwanese and Korean products
are also great and better value.

Japanese products are over-priced. Relative price of Sony products has gone
down 50% last decade but experts say they are still over-priced.

Maybe each man's opinion, but facts speak for themselves. Chinese made electronics have a very poor track record. Japan and Taiwan made are much better quality. I am not talking image quality, I am talking "will it malfunction" quality. The Chinese are just awful at it.

I'll just pay litle extra and buy MADE IN JAPAN: SHARP or PANASONIC.

if in "a little extra" you mean double, then your right. If you think the quality will be better, well thats each man's decision.

To return a product to Costco don't you need the complete box, papers and remotes? How would you return a TV a year from now? Hard to store a box that sizer.

i'm not sure how other LCDs compare, but this one is only 1000:1 contrast ratio. i think most plasmas are about 10,000:1 right now.

You need the remote and TV.

You don't need anything else.

They have a record of the purchase, they know how much you paid.

They refund you 100% of your money up to 10 years after purchase. My roommate returned his 4 year old TV after the screen started tilting.

Oh boy, here we go again - the 'how do I abuse Costco's return policy?' thread.

Ouch, I just bought this weeks ago and hooked it up in the last week for $1799.

E-mailed them to see if I can get a credit. I don't think credits are appropriate long after the purchase when there are a lot of price drops, but hopefully one close to the purchase.

Is this TV available in store or only mail order? I visited Costco yesterday and didn't notice any Sceptre. I'd replace my Vizio to Sceptre. Does anybody know how good an external tuner is? Vizio's internal tuner is good and has optical audio out, so it simplifies connection of it to home theater components.

is that Crysis they're showing off?
No, that's real life. In all seriousness, I am trying to decide between this one and the 42" Westinghouse that was on sale for $1500 before. Either that, or waiting until the end of the year and seeing what deals I can find in the mean time. I was initially considering the 42" Panasonic plasma, which has great color and overall picture quality, but I was put off by the 1024x768 resolution and the fact that plasma's can experience burn-in. Either way, I have heard ok things about the Sceptre. The price is hard to beat, and Costco has a great return policy.

Any opinions as to which is the better deal and why?

Thank you all,
Trout

The Sceptre is better by a million miles.

ok, you answered the first part of my question, care to elaborate on the second part (other than the 1080i v. p which has been mentioned)?

Thanks,
Trout

My bad, I should have just said that the Sceptre is better by over a MILLION pixels, 1,024,512 to be exact.

Thats twice as many as the Phillips. More pixels = better picture quality, means a heck of a lot for LCD's.

There is more to the equation than "More pixes = better picture quality." I went to the store and checked out, side-by-side, a 1080p Westinghouse 42" plasma and a Sharp with 1366x768 resolution. The Sharp was a clear winner due to its deeper blacks and I liked the colors better overall (and yes, I did tweak the display. The colors on the Westinghouse were more washed out). Granted, the stream was not full 1080p, so the Westinghouse was not able to show off its full glory, but really, I don't have any 1080p movies yet, and I am not going to be buying a $1000 HD-DVD/Blu-ray player and replacing all my DVDs any time soon. Maybe when the players drop to around $200 I will buy one. In either case, price is a huge deciding factor for me, and I can't see myself spending over $2000 on a TV.

I just finished installing my new 42" Panny ED in my bedroom. With a progressive DVD player the picture is OUTSTANDING. I paid $1400 from Newegg and I am very satisfied. I will not be paying for HD services and the standard analog cable signal is quite viewable. DVD's are superb! Do a little reading, I actually took a step back in my initial wants after reading so much about this particular display.

arghhhh just got it a week ago for $1799 too. Its a bitch to return to get credit since its only available online, and the ninconpoops at the return counter will open it to inspect even if the its still factory wrapped.

I am pleased with my 42" Sceptre - got it a few weeks ago online for $1799 + $70 shipping +tax - Took my receipt to Costco this weekend (Lake in the Hills, IL) and got back $200 (its now $1599) plus the $70 shipping - they were great about it, couldn't have been nicer! At the same time, I took back my 3 year old Samsung 32" HD CRT set that I bought there - I was never pleased with it. It had a ghosted vertical bar in dim lit scenes- anyway - they refunded the entire amount on it including tax. No box. Just TV & Remote & Receipt & Manual.

The Sceptre sits on my desk and I use it for a monitor - its a tad big for that - a 37 would be better - it makes a dandy TV & Monitor though!

Don't likes: it mutes the audio for a long time when changing channels, the cable from the stb to the screen is kind of short and proprietary and as on all LCD's there are no good blacks - my NEC front projector (10' diagonal) in the basement theater BLOWS it away in producing black detail in HD - but this thing puts out WAY more light than you will EVER need. The quality of the STB scaling is less than stellar and there is some pixelation and motion artifacting but not abnormal for a consumer product. Its bezel is shiny black and I don't like that - its too reflective. The always-on Sceptre name in blue LED's light on the bezel is tacky and distracting.

If you are doing dual purpose and using it as a computer monitor - do not make the mistake of getting anything less than 1920 x1080 in this size monitor - the much more common and plentiful 1,366 x 768 ones do not hold a candle to it.

I just tried to get the difference, and because it's about 50 days, over the limit of 30, they won't do it. I'd have to return the old one and buy another.

They also start free shipping now, while I paid for it.

On the log - it is annoying, I stand up a dvd case to hide it.

Considering the prices for EDTV's and HDTV's, pay the extra couple hundred for the HDTV. Most of you guys will be moving to HD content (either over the air, cable or satellite) within a couple years anyways so no sense buying an EDTV like BATCH71. The cost difference between the two are simply not worth it. As for 1080p vs 720p, the clear winner is 1080p. Or is it? Can someone please tell me how the average consumer can now, or in the near future, obtain 1080p content? If you said cable, over the air or satellite, I can tell you it's highly highly unlikely we will have anything higher than 720p content (which is superior to 1080i) in the next five years. If you said Blu-ray or HD-DVD, well, talk to me in two years time when we have a winner. Because I do not want to spend 600-1000 bucks on a fancy optical disc player that may or may not be the next beta.

Sceptre 37"

List on web site as the Sceptre® X37SV-Komodo

which should be 1080P but the site says otherwise..

That one is not 1080p capable, at least it doesn't have the resolution to display it. I don't know what happened to the 1080p 37" on their site, but it used to be $1,499, so either they got rid of it altogether or else ran out of stock and took it off the site. I would imagine that if it does show back up its going to have a price between that 37" and the 42" 1080p, so maybe $1,399 or (hopefully) lower.

Look in AVS forums at the Sceptre official thread. I think there's an easy solution to the logo. People have found the wire and it is as simple as disconnecting a speaker. No more glowing logo!
