I would never buy a big TV from buy.com because of their horrible CS. If you get a good one that was shipped ok that's fine, but if you get one that's DOA or damaged, you'll probably go through hell getting another one (or your money back).

No point in dropping all that money on a TV and not even get 1080P. Yes, HD channels don't even broadcast in that resolution yet, but you want to be future proof at least. And once Blu-ray players drop down in price to around DVD players in the next few years, you want to be able to rent or buy Blu-ray movies and watch them in 1080P.

I think it would just be stupid not to buy a 1080P TV as your main TV, unless you plan on buying a cheap HDTV now and then upgrade again in a couple years. I'm one to just spend the money now and get something good that I will keep for a number of years.

I'd have to agree, especially with the difference being as little as 200 dollars to move up to 1080p is some cases. If you can't afford 1k for a 1080, you certainly can't afford $800 for a 720.

However, many people can't tell the difference between the two, especially on sets smaller than 32 inches so in that case it may not be worth it.

they have a 1080p 42" Westinghouse at Costco for $699 (QAM Tuner, 4 HDMI inputs, 2 component)...i got one last weekend since my old Westy 37" seemed like it was getting too small

Text

text seemed a bit sharper on the 37" though, but the 37" didn't have a tuner...QAM HD comes in pretty sweet on the 42"...for $699, I won't complain...

There's no reason to get a 1080p unless you have something like a 50" or higher, you just can't tell the difference, especially if you're not using Blu-Ray. You also have to look at contrast ratio, some of the 'cheap' HDTVs have garbage contrast ratios, that means the colors won't look good at all. My current Samsung 32" 720p looks leaps and bounds better than some 1080p TVs.

My 42" is used as a bedroom TV but if its your main TV thats another story. Personally I dont buy into 1080p on a 42". Id rather get a Samsung doing 720p than a Westinghouse @ 1080p. Once you jump to 52"+ Id say go for 1080p.
