I'm buying a graphics card for my brother, his machine will be a Phenom X2 550, 2GB of RAM, socket AM2 (not +, so PCIE x16 ver 1). Power supply can handle any of those cards.

Originally I was going to buy a 4350 for the $45 or so they're going for and call it a day, however, I started looking at the performance of them, and sorta hemmed and hawed if I wanted to drop $45 on something that performed like that.

Then I saw the 4770, and figured, That's perfect! Low power draw, low heat, much higher performance, for basically a little more than double.

My hangup is the 4850 and 4870 (including 1GB models) are getting so cheap, they're within $40 of the 4770 - and the performance difference between the 4770 and 4870 1GB is without a doubt large.

I'm going to buy the morning of June 22nd, so I realize I'm asking a tough question...

But: What would you all do?

To me, it seems like between the 4350 and the 4770, you're going 4350 only if rock bottom price is important to you.

Between the 4770 and 4850, it's 4770 unless you absolutely need that extra memory bandwidth, and are willing to sacrifice the extra power draw and heat (which may or may not come with extra noise) to go along with it.

Between the 4770 and 4870 1GB, you're only going 4770 if you care considerably less about performance than about heat and power draw.

D@mn you AMD and your multitude of graphics offerings, you're giving me too much choice at too little price!!!

Set a firm budget. On June 22nd buy the best card you can at your budget.

I've seen 4850's on sale recently for $70-90 after rebate. That is ridiculous.

Why not right in between and get a cheap 4650/4670? Far superior to the 4350 but much cheaper than the 4770.

If you can't find the 4770 in stock, the 4830 is another decent choice. They OC like crazy (go with the MSI or Sapphire versions) and you can get 4850 performance for $70 after rebate. They use very little power and run extremely cool, unlike the 4850.

If you can afford it, though, I'd go with the 4870 for performance.

Thanks for the ideas and opinions All!

I'm going to actually buy when the 9.6 Cat's come out (my 6/22 estimate), as that'll be the next release that supports the AM2 motherboard I've got.

I think, weighing all the options, I'm going to let my Bro decide: (4770) Either have less performance but less heat (dad doesn't turn the air conditiong on usually until it gets pretty hot), or, (4870 1GB) have max performance with additional heat.

The money isn't a problem at these dollar amounts, so I guess I'll leave it up to him. Watch though, there'll be a hot deal on a 4890 by then for $168 or something like that, and I'll be back in this same boat... Oh well, that's why we all enjoy this stuff I guess...

There's something different on the AM3 X2's than the AM3 X3's and X4's?

You better check the motherboard's own specific CPU support list to see if it supports Phenom. There is a very high chance, if this isn't an AM2+ board, that it doesn't support Phenom II based processors (because of the power delivery to the CPU from the mobo), although it may support the first Phenom processors.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I was one of the ones pushing for Gigabyte to update their 690G AM2 boards when the first AM3's came out, so I already knew that my GA-MA69G-S3H supports Phenom X4 925 and down in the AM3 line..

I've already filled out a ticket though asking Gigabyte what's up with the new AM3 Phenom X2 and Athlon X2. We'll see what they say. I think though when they released the F7 BIOS for this board, the AM3 X3's weren't even out yet. When they came out, they didn't have to release a new BIOS, they just updated the CPU support list.

So I'm hoping it's either that for the AM3 Phenom X2, or, they release a new BIOS soon for it.

+1.....especially on the 4670 which is a very good card for most games and excellent on older ones plus they occasionally will pop up at < $60 shipped.

As said, set your budget and on June 22nd buy the fastest card you can. However, you should seriously consider also upping your RAM to 4Gb. When building my current rig I got a slower video card just so I could afford 4Gb of RAM.

Do the 4870's still suffer from heat/lockup issues? They can be bought for $160-$180 now.

I think, after reading the 'Price cuts for 4800 series' thread, what I'm going to do is have him use the onboard 690G graphics, and wait until the price drops, then decide from there.

The 4650/4670 idea is also a good one....if the 4770's get down in price in a month though, I'd be willing to spend another $15-$20 on the performance improvement.

Another thought I had was just buy the cheapest 4350 I can find, and keep it until we can see what the incoming DX11 cards are like. If they're too expensive > $150, then I can sell the 4350 on here used for like $20 or something, and just get what will be by then a pretty cheap 4770 and/or 4870 1GB (or who knows, maybe even a 4890 on a hot deal).

If there's a < $150 DX11 part that has good performance compared to it's DX10 competition at that price point, then we'll go that way.

The 4650/4670 idea is a good one too....haha, man, one could literally go just about any way here, all arguments are valid....

4870s never did suffer from heat issues if you just took a minute to add a profile to run the fan a little faster than the default. Even at the default speed it ran hot but didn't lock up.

It depends on the resolution you will be running at and when your next upgrade will be. I don't know how you are getting answers and opinions without that information.
