@29 cents per cd with case, it's a very good value, it even has a scratch resistant top!

Fry's is selling the newer GQ discs (it says 1-12x on the right side of the cd) with phy dye again. I assume that for now all of them will be using phy dye, but who knows how long it will last, Fry's GQ discs are notorious for changing manufacturers with a snap of a finger.

So what does fye dye mean? Better quality than before? They don't usually go bad on me, but if they do, it's only like 20 cents each disc. Couldn't believe they had 50 count 70min CDR's for $9.99.

DO NOT buy these CDRs. It says that it's 12x but believe me they are not. They won't even work at 8x! Everytime I try to burn anything above 8x it tells me something about error in the media. These CDRs suck! They are definitely the worst I've ever had.

not working? cough*non-plextor*cough =P

30cents? not bad for a non-flaky cd with jewelcase. i bought the flaky ones at .20 in a cakestack, plus a pack of stomper labels at .10 each. no jewel case but at least i get to print.

guess i'll wait on these til i run thru most of my stack of 250 or so hehe. doncha remember when the flaky cds were 2bucks and dreaming of the day they'd cost a quarter

rpzero - I think in your case it's the "SUE" syndrome (Stupid User Error)

I've burned a spindle and a half of these without a single coaster. As for data longetivity, considering the data I burn is obsolete within 6 months it doesn't matter but the ones I have here are Pthalocyanine dye Type 9 so they should last a while in any case.

Good to see that they're on sale again.

I had the same problem about "media" turns out it was the drive. I burned dozens of coasters with a phillips 4x, bought a ricoh 8x and havent burned a coaster yet. I agree with the previous post about user error... but it took a new burner to realize it.

I agree with rpzero cause I have a Plextor 8x20 and a Plextor 12x10x32 and whenever I use this cd I get some type of error with both drives. Something about the Power Calibration is incorrect when I use Nero or CloneCD. I will never buy these disks again. The Plextor 12x10x32 would burn onto these discs after getting these errors. I had to keep trying until it finally burned on it. My 2 cents.

ummmm, I believe power calibration is usually caused by the drive (dirty lens, etc), not the media.

Amnesiac, I'm just trying to offer advice to fellow anandtech users based on my own experience. There is no need to call someone stupid because your experiences were different. I have the Iomega or "Plextor" 12x10x32x, and as you should know it has burnproof. It would be very difficult to get a coaster with this drive but this particular brand produced one every single time, about 10 that's I've tried and I used CDRs from different spindles too. Every other brand of cheap CDRs made in Taiwan worked fine except for these.

With good CDRs being so cheap these days I don't see why anyone would consider these questionable CDRs. For example, the 100-pack TDK CDRs at CompUSA were top quality stuff made by Taiyo Yuden and they only cost 10 cents each, compared to the 30 cents that these POS GQs are demanding.

Considering your little SUE comment, I say that who ever buys these CDRs are because they have SBE (Stupid Buyer Error).

Thanks YAZ for backing me up on this.

That SUE comment was out of line. There's no need to rip on anyone here...even if he didn't have a drive with burnproof, that doesn't make it his fault. Good media should work in all but the crappiest burners. It could be the software he's using too, which would also not be his fault. About the only thing a person could do to screw up a CD would be running Quake 3 while burning on a non BP drive or something like that. Ease up.

Hmm... I have a hp 9110i and I've NEVER had a coaster that's not due to user error (i.e. I had 5 different programs running at the same time AND tried burning a cd) I've fed the cheapest cd's I could find from the compusa 50cds for $10 to fry's GC's in it with zero problems. I have one complaint with hp burners though. They have an idiot proof bios that goes as far as to refuse to burn a cd if it detects anything illegal in the format. Hence it refuses to allow me to make copy protected cd's with illegal toc or any other method that relies on non standard (read introduced errors) formating to acheive a level of protection. For that I rely on a plextor, but for error free trouble free burning it's hard to beat the HP.

avoid this brand like the plague- I have lost many of my backups (made between december and june of last year) on both the cdrs and cdrws (the latter have given me a +50% loss rate over time)

I've used Nero on a 8x20 SCSI Plextor and GQ discs (bought 4-5 months ago)seem to have a problem with burning big files (550+ megs). The big files never burn properly, smaller ones are fine... using other disks (TDK, Sonys, other generics) burning the same things work great, but the Plextor does not like the GQs, very strange.

Also, I've used the very first GQs and they were pretty bad, the data only lasted 5 months, and that's if yu could burn on them...

The Power Calibiration thing can be due to Nero... When I updated to the latest veriosn of Nero I kept getting that error... So I reverted back to an old version, and it was fine (this was for an old Mitsumi burner).

I have used GQ discs for over a year now. The phy dye GQ's I burned a year ago are still good, no problems, well except one disc that went bad because I accidentally cracked it from the outer edge to the inner ring!

Just a side note: I absolutely hate cynanine GQ discs, pieces of crap...burned every single one fine, lasted for over a year now, but extremely low compatibility
