If someone was forcing you to put your awesome 45nm chips on one of these 4 budget boards, which brand would you go with?

Gigabyte GA-p35-DS3l
DFI Infinity p35 BLOOD IRON
ASUS P5K vanilla
MSI NEO-fr 2 p35

or what other boards would you suggest?

P.S.> Thanks in advance to Yoxxy.

MSI p35 neo2 - by all reports it should be compatable out of the box, you still need to flash the bios, but at least it will boot so you can do so. There are no major PSU or RAM incompatibility problems that i have heard of (there are for abit and asus that do effect my build, perhaps not yours). It overclocks as far as I want it to (400mhz fsb). It has all the features I need.

Needless to say that I have thought about this matter and compared many of the same boards you are looking at. For some reason this forum does not have many vocal MSI fans. Lots of support for gigabyte and asus, with a smaller but outspoken group of DFI fans. When i started asking around for a p35 board it seemed that gigabyte was hands down the favorite. So, lots of bias on this issue. Me, well I curently have an ASUS with no complaints about it. I am fine with any main brand, just don't have any preference between them. So, as someone who was in your shoes last week let me tell you what i found out.

After looking into it, it seemed that all p35 boards perform the same at stock, so it is just a feature question and overclocking.

If you are going to overclock to 400-450 maybe even 500, they can all do it, except for the first version MSI's, the second version can overclock just as well (the Neo2 is an updated version). So again, all down to features. If you want to overclock above a 500mhz fsb then i think gigabyte/DFI is the way to go, but check out the gigabyte site's forums for any particular issues you may run into.

Lastly, i haven't mentioned the ASUS, basically because it is identical to the otherboards, it just did not have the features i was looking for so I did not go with it. Seems fine though, if it fits your needs.

Forum post from Gary Key says:

"**Start on 12/5 with the MSI Neo2FR - Budget P35 Boards to include four boards. Out of these, we have winners with the Gigabyte DS3L, MSI Neo2FR, and abit IP35E, all three boards should suit 90%+ of the users... ** Appears IP35E is being replaced by the IP35V, not good... **** Update, abit is keeping the IP35-E in production, we will give Editor's awards to the Gigabyte DS3L and abit IP35-E here shortly. " And they have already given the Neo2 a Silver Award.

I am getting a Neo2 unless the review comes out before hand, then i will read it and see. The major problems noted for the Neo2, keeping it from a Gold award, are BIOS and utility related. So, with a good software/bios update it may be a gold award, but the hardware was fine and im ok with that.

edit: make the links actually work

yeah thank you. I currently have a 965p DS3 from gigabtye. I've emailed them expressing my dissatisfaction with their lack of bios updates for 45nm compatibility. Asus, dfi, msi and others have released bios's for 945g, 965, 975, ich8/7/9/9r/etc that make them compatible with 45nm penryns. Gigabyte refuses to do this, i guess so that people buy one of their 32 different P35/31/x38/x48 offerings. Asus also offers 50 versions of the same mobo based on the same chipset, yet they're also giving the customer bios support for the older chipsets with the new processors. Due to a biased opinion of gigabyte, bad reviews of the p5ks on newegg, and the lack of utlity/bios support for the new fr2, I've opted to go with the Blood Iron

DFI holds the world records in all intel 775 FSB clocks for their lanparty UT series of P35 mobos, so i read and it appears the blood iron is the same thing, with less of a feature set and cheaper Power management.
reviews show it benching on a 580mhz FSB. not too bad and well over what ill need with the e8400. I was seriously considering the abit ip35-e

thanks for your informative response.

My issues with the abit was a lack of eSATA and some reported problems with my power supply, Corsair HX.
I did not like the DFI because it too did not have eSATA capabilities.

I would love to see why they did not give the DFI an award while the abit, gigabyte and MSI all got one.

I predict this thread to become more popular next week when people begin OCing E8400's in these budget boards. Once I see reviews of the best OC/highest FSB clocks on 45nm dual cores, then i will start shopping around. Right now it looks like blood iron/ip35

I am pretty sure that the review which should be posted sometimes soon, overclocked the boards with either a q6600 or a e6XXX. Should be fairly compatible as far as the board is concerned. Of course the bios for the board and the 45nm cores will have some differences, but i expect all of the major manufactures will resolve any issues quickly enough. Heck, if the e6850 or e6750 comes down in price a decent amount next week ill probably just pick up one of them. It is not like the e8XXXs are giving you that much more performance to justify a $100 premium. Just have to see what i looks like next week days.

Right now the E8400 is about the same price as the E6750, making the choice obvious. Why do you think the E6750 is going to suddenly costs $100 less in a week?
