The "shield" is that when you know the government knows you are the owner of the gun, you aren't going to use it to commit crimes.

And as has been proven in many other nations, when the government knows you are the owner of the gun, you will cease to own said gun within a decade or be thrown in jail.

Ah, thought you were making a different point. Yeah it's relatively easy to get a gun in CA, you just have to deal with less selection (due to the bullshit drop test), essentially zero carry rights at this point, and the 10 rd mag limit, among many other pieces of feel-good red tape. But yeah, you can own a gun.

In terms of carry permits in California it really depends on where you live. Once you get outside of the coastal counties most Sheriffs issue frequently. It's only in the more leftist counties that you have to be rich or politically well connected to get a carry permit.

*EDIT (You have to scroll down for the map)

I own 13 guns, none of which were purchased in the months leading up to or after the last Presidential election.

I've been thinking about buying another handgun lately but again, my decision has zero point zero to do with politics or who is in the White House.

Wow, some of those were new to me. A few were just accent annoyances...if someone asked me for some "fo'five," first thing in my mind would be "English, m'f'er, do you speak it?!"

Became a gun owner this year, but not due to the politics. I actually went through the process of educating myself about the concept first, though having an infantryman for a brother does help. Clinton and the AWB seems to have cemented the alarmist reaction of buying up when a Democrat becomes elected.

Correct.

However if you need to kill someone, a gun sure makes it easier than using a pointed stick.

But when there aren't guns, people resort to other methods such as knives. Britain has had enough knife deaths recently since their gun control is more strict.

I will NEVER hand a weapon to somebody that I haven't unloaded, cleared, checked, cleared again, checked again, action open.

^This. Yes, gun ownership is a right but it is obviously a deadly weapon. Purchasing that should come with required training or proof thereof (maybe even a psych evaluation)...not just a permit.

I'm going to call complete and utter bullshit on the "47% of US homes have a gun"

I know 2 - maybe 3 people who own a gun - and 1 of them is a cop

Naturally it varies based on what part of the country you are in. I know very few people who don't own at least one gun.

Great to see this number rising, whatever the reason.

When I was 24 and first bought my house I didn't own anything. My first two purchases were a mattress and a gun.

I know several who own several guns, and none of them are cops. Northern Delaware.

What part of the country do you live in, if you don't mind? The vast majority of gun owners don't advertise it, and rarely take their gun out to shoot. I think it is fairly amazing how rare you see a gun when you consider the amount owned in this country.

Well there's a lot of sitgma and ignorance in most areas. I got on my gun rights soapbox with a guy in a local bar once, guy thought "open carry" meant you could wave your gun around and point it at people. I promptly educated him on the difference between "open carry" (legal in most areas in DE) and "brandishing" which outside of self-defense is either a serious misdemeanor or felony depending on state and circumstances. He then said "oh well that's good" and shut up. Point is, knowing the difference between open carry and brandishing is like knowing the difference between the accelerator and brake to a responsible gun owner, but non gun-owners just don't have a clue, and largely judge based on the trumped up image the media's given them.

Hell in some states even responsible gun owners will unknowingly violate carry restrictions due to some special obscure local ordinance or whatnot.

It seems so short sighted to continue allowing the free flow of firearms into our society with no means to track them. We're going to have to collect them all someday, and we're just making that task more difficult.

Why are we going to need to collect them someday?

I too am skeptical of that figure. I am the only person in my entire office (which employs 15 people) who has a gun, and none of my friends has any. Even in places where gun ownership is relatively common (e.g., Texas), I can't imagine half of the households have one.

I know few people that don't have a firearm in their house. Just in my workplace alone there are at least 10 that have purchased their first firearm. Think about that for a minute, these are first time gun buyers. They see what is coming and want to be able to protect what they own.

You don't think people are preparing for the coming class war/riots? If you don't you're not paying attention. My dad is a fucking WW2 vet and he's telling me to get ready. I WILL heed his words of wisdom.

When Obama loses the election in 2012, I WILL be ready. Bring it liberals, bring it. Have you not seen what happened in greece, europe, london, etc? That shit is coming here. I'm ready.

I am not sure that I know anyone that doesn't have some type of gun in their house. I am sure I do but they sure haven't advertised it. Damn near every male I know owns at least a shotgun. They aren't gun nuts or anything but they own one.

It's half the households in the US total, not half of every state.

I know, but I'm quite certain that where I live it's less than half, and it's been that way everywhere I've lived (which is a lot of places). In order to aggregate out to 47% it has to be over 50% in some significant area.

You're hilarious. Who are you now predicting "WILL" be our next President? Last I checked it was Perry. Since you're always up for a bet, I offered to bet you that neither Perry nor Cain would be elected, but you decided not to take me up on it.

If you and your knucklehead co-workers seriously think there is going to be a widespread "class war," you must be suffering from some kind of mass psychosis. With no disrespect meant to your dad, he must be well into his 80s. Each of my late grandparents said some pretty goofy things late in life. The difference between him and you is that you can't plausibly claim to be suffering from senile dementia.

Would you like to take my bet that there won't be a "class war" within 6 months of the election, regardless of who wins? And before you say, "if Obama wins, there won't be a class war," keep in mind that you have repeatedly guaranteed that he "WILL" lose.

I'm in California, also lived quite a while in Colorado. Of all my friends, family, neighbors i'd say at least 70% have one firearm or more in their house. It could just be my circle of friends and family, but I thought the 47% number was low.

*Edit* I should have added that if people are aware of an anti-gun attitude they won't usually inform the anti-gun type that they have a firearm in the house.

I've never even shot a gun...

There's always time to learn a new skill. Stop at a range, either indoor or outdoor and ask about firearm safety instruction. Even if you don't own a firearm it's always a good idea to learn firearm safety. If the poll was accurate half the homes in the U.S. have a firearm in them, you should at least learn how to be safe if you run into one. Something to teach your kids also.
