so people think a/bc is the same as a/(bc) and bc is not the same as b*c???

That's my justification at least. It changes the order you calculate things.
Too used to coding I guess, its a standard in Microsoft languages.

seeing this question on various forums is almost like looking at a political flamefest. it doesn't matter if the question is ambiguous, people just pick a side and argue away.

Gayner was worse.

What happened to him?

OH I know, and he's still banned, and I hope forever.

GA came back from ban 2 days ago, posted some trollish comments here and there, and now I noticed that he no longer has an avatar--which usually means some form of vacation/ban.

haha

The answer is 288 and anyone who answers otherwise should be ashamed of themselves. I'm astonished that so many people answered 2.

So a something like say wolfram alpha or a calculator should be ashamed of itself?
An inanimate object isn't even capable of that.

My Math-Fu has become weak. Chose wrong, but sorta knew what to do. Did Brackets First(Correct), but then went to all associations with Brackets next(Incorrect).

Fail.

Math was created by man and anyone that say on eway or the other is blindly following and is making their own assumptions.
For there to be differences in products like that, that were made by highly educated people, shows there is still debate on what it should be.

Also, what if the question was actually suppose to be solved in hex?

This has nothing to do with order of operations, it's simply do you think that 48/2(9+3) means 48/(2(9+3)) or not?

Or they did follow it to the letter... first parenthesis then exponents then multiplication then division then addition then subtractions.
Seriously as explained already there is still debate even in academia about this.
Either can be right.
