Spencers finally has the 48 inch long Black Light Fixtures (largest I've ever found) for $49.99 (on sale from $59.99). Give your computer cave a cool glow to it (well, all the clutter on my desk should glow at least)! They are also running a promo until the 7th at 3pm for free shipping on orders $50+ (so you need another item to put you over the top for free shipping). Not to worry though, there is a 15% off code at the link below. 15% off is taken before shipping, so that gives you a budget of roughly $7.50 or so to buy in order to make the minimum for free shipping (and you might as well go for the extra free item rather than eating the shipping). They have lots of other cool stuff... funny too that they have a Spencers store in my state and their website didn't charge me sales tax....

I'm sure those are nice, well finished units.. but for a tighwad like myself, I was able to buy a 48" black light tube, then I bought a cheap 48" flourescent fixture at home depot, and wired it up with an old lamp cord with a built in switch. I dont remember the total cost, but it wasn't nearly as much.

Like I said though, pretty ghetto looking..

I bought a regular black light lightbulb and screwed it into an old lamp. Total cost < $5

Spencers has smaller Black Light bulbs for $5-$10 as well... but if you want size and watts, I have not found anything bigger in the retail market than 48 inches.

I use 2 48" blacklight bulbs to make a haunted room in my garage for the trick or treaters every year. You should see how the costumes glow. Also, throw laundry detergent with phosphate on the floor (looks like glowing sand).I think the bulbs were $30 each from a h/w store, and I stuck them in an old fixture.

i went the same route as gonzalez. It might look kinda ghetto, but $60 for a blacklight is outrageous. Go to your local hardware store, you can get a 48" fixture for $10, and each bulb shouldn't cost you more than $10-$12 each. This brings your total cost down to about $35-$40, and they work twice as good as the $60 ones, since there are two 48" bulbs, not just 1. Only downfall is that you have to attach an extension cord, and/or a switch, and like i said above, it looks a little ghetto.

<edit>
I put the disclaimer that I thought it was probably illegal and to try at your own risk. Sorry if I offended anyone. I took that part of my post out because I don't want anyone to get upset.

i'de say you'll be lucky if the moderators don't ban you for even suggesting that. it is unquestionably illegal.

buying a regular flourescent shop light for $8 and putting in black light tubes is definitely the cheap way to go, and you get 2 bulbs!!

mchurchm suggested switching the boxes of black lights and regular flourescent lights at your local hardware store. This is obviosly illegal and that is why he edited his message.
