480i to 1080p?

Is there anyway to convert, say AVI files, to MPEG4? I have Cyberlink PowerDirector 7 and am curious as to how I can make HD music videos. At the very least I'd like 720p, but am unsure how to up the quality of the existing files I have.

I'm guessing I'd have to obtain a raw version or, at the least, another 1080p version of the file(s) my project would be using. I'd assume once it's been cut to a lower format you can't restore it, but I'm not sure. I know very little about video formatting and what not.

You can't increase the quality. You can up the file size, but once the information's lost, it's gone.

As lxlskllr has said, you cannot create something out of nothing. The difference between 480i and 1080p is rather significant, that is a whole lot of data that you are missing. Nothing can replace quality source files.

i think you want this
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmw...php/Main/EnhanceButton

sadly it only exists in hollywood land.

bloating a 480i file to 1080p is possible. but its like enlarging something with a photocopier. turning cr@p into bigger cr@p wasting paper too! and in this case you'd just waste a massive amount of space. scalers do the same thing on the fly really, so theres no point in trying to bypass that.

you cannot create something out of nothing as stu said. the difference between 480i and 1080p is more than 6 times the resolution. to fill that gap is only possible with garbage/blurry mush.

read up on wikipedia and other video compression sites explaining this stuff..there are loads. and remember any lossy compression is also a one way street, each time you feed it through the compressor more gets thrown away.

So I need to obtain HD content in order to use HD content. Makes sense, and I suspected that but wasn't sure.

Thanks guys.

Actually, you might have a slim chance of making that video look better than blurry mush. There are some really amazing super-resolution algorithms that have been developed to enhance low-resolution video. Here's a semi-practical one for use with AviSynth.

Now, I say the chance is slim because that script doesn't work with video that has a lot of motion. (And what interesting music video doesn't? Although there might be some relatively still scenes you could use it on.) It also can't bring out detail that isn't already generally apparent. For instance, here is an amazing upsampling of a smaller video frame. On the other hand, here's what happens when it's used on plants moving by.

Good luck!
