4850 heat question

I really want to get a 4850 since I have a crossfire motherboard. I have put a lot of effort into making a pretty quiet pc that runs fairly cool, so the heat concerns me. I read about people adjusting the fan speed and installing duorbs, but wont the heat generated be the same either way? and does that affect the effect of the heat on the rest of the components?

The 4850 will still heat up the case since the coolers forl it I've seen just shift the heat around inside the case. To keep your case cooler you'd need to find a replacement that exhausts heat out of the case like the 4870 does.

hey i just installed ntune and my 8600gts idles at over 60 C and just loaded up iRacing for a few laps and it got near 80C... which doesnt sound much different than what im reading about the 4850 so now i dont see what the big deal is

edit: i just turned on logging, make that 94C for my 8600 !!

the big deal is that my 3870 idles at 40c without messing with the fan profiles, and 29c when I force the fan to 42%. Can a 4850 run comfortably for a long time at 80c? sure, and a lot of them will. It's just more fun to drop them down to 40-50c if you can, that's all

Don't count on it. The 4850 is going to run pretty hot in your case if you have a 8600 running at 94c. It sounds like you probably don't have much airflow in the GPU area. I think you're in for a nasty heat surprise when you toss that 4850 in there. Be sure to modify the fan profile.

OK, you guys got me obsessed with temps and noise again now... thanks!

So here is my story (when i refer to CPU temp i mean the core temp according to RealTemp (everything else shows 10 degrees higher))

Like I said, I was running an Nvidia 8600GTS for the last few months. The thing is, I stopped playing games. Then last month iRacing came out, and I'm hooked on it. I ditched my X2 3800 and got an E8400. Went from ASUS A8N-E to P5Q-E. I have a Ninja Mini with the 80mm fan.

Wondering about the 4850 temps, I looked at my 8600 temps, and it idled around 70 and when i played iRacing it hit 94C! Didnt really think about it but read Modular's post and it made sense.

Long story short I changed the orientation of the CPU fan so its sucking the air from the video card area (down to up) and then the case fan (and now Power Supply fan) suck everything out. Once I did that the GPU temps went down to 59-84. The CPU temp did not go up any (I think I'm hitting the bottom of the thermometer on the core, it never goes below 42 no matter what (RealTemp))

So now I get the 4850 (by the way, its 2 inches longer than the 8600, it BARELY fits in my Sonata II (the PCIe power connector wire is folded and sitting INSIDE the casefan housing like 1 cm from the blades(but its too positioned too high to really affect the videocard on this mobo)))... ahem

Yea, anyway, so the 4850 idled at 78 when I first put it in. Fan at 22. Note that the CPU now idled hotter, around 45-46.
I upped the fan to 35 and now it idles at 60, about the same as the 8600. The CPU is idling right now at 43.

I dont know how to log temps on this card yet while I'm in a game. Can anyone let me know?

Anyway, I've had this card only a few hours, but I guess I can say the heat is not terrible. The fan noise might be an issue though, I'm not sure yet. I could definitely hear a difference between 22 and 35 with my setup (2 120mm, 80mm cpu, 140mm PSU are the other fans).

You guys got me totally obsessed again with temps and noise again (my x2 3800 and 8600GTS was damn near silent), but I guess its inevitable with a new build. I was thinking about digging up that Sonata CPU duct, cutting it in half and sealing off the top, and using the bottom half to blow outside air into the case below the videocard. I'm also getting a 92mm PWM fan to put on the ninja mini.

THANKS A LOT

If you are hell bent on using the Sonata, modding your own duct would help considerably. I did a Sonata mod a few years back but with a cpu HSF not a gpu. Regardless getting some outside air directly on the sink did wonders.

If you are not hell bent on Sonata, getting a well ventilated case such as Antec 900 or 300 would help temps a lot.

I never cared for the sideways hard drive mounting system of the Sonata. IMO, it blocked the incoming airflow too much.

at this point the only reason i want to keep it is because im sick of taking the freaking motherboard out

just found my duct though, yay... do you know any websites that show sonata mods

this started out as such an innocent little upgrade

What I would do is attach the fan to the door, then attach the duct, Then using some creativity somehow attach flexable hose (like dryer vent but smaller) and direct it into the fan hole opening on the VC. It could work very well if executed properly.

Cardboard and tape work well too. Best thing is, Sonanta has no window, unless you want to mod the door and show your creation off

i think you are talking about a different kind of duct... my case came with this:

http://www.antec.com/images/400/sonata2_inside.jpg
http://www.cobolhacker.com/ima...iet/assembled_duct.jpg

the left side is the bottom, it attaches to the back of the case, then im gonna cut off the right side in the pic and cap it. the fan goes in the little cutout you can barely see. so it will suck air from the vertical vent in bottom back of the case the case and blow it onto the expansion cards. hopefully that increases the pressure and gets sucked by the exhaust fans

Yeah, that is newer than the Sonata I used. You could still ditch that duct and build your own though. Remove that duct altogether, cut and drill some holes in the side door.

If you have a MicroCenter near you, you could pick up a couple of these Cyclone Blowers for $1.99 They work decently to remove hot air from the case, and aren't louder than a 120mm at low. At $2 you can't really go wrong. The build quality isn't anything great, in fact you can unsnap the plastic fan housing from the backplate to reverse orientation (so you can put one of these in front and behind your card).

Well I cut the duct in half, and made a nifty little blower out of it, but the goddamn fan housing is still higher than the videocard, so its useless. I took it out.

I just got the 92 mm PWM fan on my ninja mini, i love it, so quiet. The BIOS even got mad cause it spun so slow (cause my cpu temp is bottomed out)

As for the 4850, I have it running at 40%

I made this in google docs just for the heck of it

Graph of my temps during test session (1 car) and 25 minute race (14 cars)

This is really no worse than what I was getting with the 8600, but I can still improve it with a little more fiddling with the case

I wonder if my poor sound blaster xfi will overheat since its 1 slot below the card (another slot in between)

Well if it doesn't work out, just save yourself the trouble and buy yourself a 3rd party cooler.

My zalman vf1000 results in an idle temp of ~34C. Yes 34C. (and its ~35C across the PCB sensors)

how much space to those things take up? will i lose the slot below the card or more? also, are they quiet, and do they cool all the memory chips and stuff like the stock cooler ?

Just one slot so your card effectively becomes a dual slot card. They come with 8 ram sinks for the GDDR3 ram but nothing for the PWM area. I bought 8 more zalman ramsinks (where only 6 was used) to cool the PWM area which gets pretty toasty.

I moved my 92 MM fan from the front of the ninja mini (blowing front to back) to the bottom (blowing down to up).

So now my ninja is sucking air from the videocard. this heats up my cpu a little bit under load, but now my videocard is running about 10 degrees less (same exact behavior as 8600gts but that was with 80mm fan on the ninja). i also changed the vidcard fan from 40 to 42. also i have a piece of cardboard on the bottom rear vents. its stuck to the case from the suction

I'm thinking about opening the expansion slot between the videocard and the soundcard, maybe that will suck cold air over the videocard's heatsink

still i might end up getting a 3rd party cooler if a cheap one comes out, maybe once i get this magic rebate money

Dont know. Never used stock cooling since i swapped the stock HSF with a vf1000 right out of the box.
