4850 vs 8800GTS g92

I currently have an 8800 GTS g92, which is alright, but I'm wondering if the 4850 is better?

it is better. I don't think it is worth paying 150$ for a new one as an upgrade from what you have. But if you are choosing between the two for a new machine then the 4850.
Or the 9800GT.

9800GT ?!? WTH -- that's just a rebadged 8800GT...

The 8800GTS is about 5% slower than the 4850, not really worth an upgrade unless you can get a good price selling your current GTS.

And even if you can, it's still not really worth it.

I've had both and opted to keep the GTS, it runs cooler and quieter and my rig stays cooler overall because it dumps heat out the back of the box.

He meant that you should either get a 4850 (~170) or a 9800GT (~110) if you are choosing for a new machine.

i am very happy with my 8800GTS512 its a dual slot cooler design that makes it more silent, dumps heat outside and the card is NOT as long as an 18 wheeler like the new high end cards from nVidia, stock or overclocked it plays crisis and everything else maxed out at 16x10 so what else do you really need ?

stop the overkill and just get what you need today

Maxed is all High, in XP.

I was gonna say, my e8400 @ 3.6 + 8800GTS 512 was not even able to play crysis with everything on "high" smoothly, at least not in the alien ship levels. The first half of the game, no prob, but not the second. With the 4870 I have in there now it does better and I am able to go to "very high" in some settings but not everything. It still has issues with that darn ship...

That would HARDLY be an upgrade.... I would more or less call it a "Brand Change" on near the same playing field.

Save your dough for a while....

I don't see how you can say an 8800gts g92 is "alright". That's actually a very nice video card.... It's in the top 10 any how.

I'd put it in the top five cards, myself...

And if it does what you need, just use it until it doesn't anymore, then upgrade.

Personally I can't even justify the upgrade to a GTX 260 because I play mostly WoW and older games that don't even max my 8800GTS.

For proper perspective the card in my sig would be upgraded to at least a 4870 or GTX260 - not an HD4850 or 8800GTS 512. From and 8800GTS 512 you should most definitely go to a 4870-GTX260-280. JMO.
