486sx to a Pentium upgrade question, Newbie

I have compac prolinea 4/25s 486sx I found at a garage sale?

Can I just take out the 486sx chip, put in a Pentium chip in the socket?
Where can I find info on the net on this?

you prolly are stuck with 486/586 cpu's

or throw it in the trash

you may be able to squeeze a small linux on it

You could try one of those crazy overdrive processors. I heard that performance isn't really up to a real Pentium though.

Yes just what do you expect to run on it. Win 3.11? In my experience, pc's older then a certain point become completely worthless.

It has w95a on it now....24am....it runs nice......I have not tried to be on the net with it.

Hey Robbert, dont let these Overclocking Maniacs get ya down..

But a 486SX does need to be upgraded, but dont throw it away as mentioned earlier.. There are several things that I have done with older 486s that I have had in the past..

1) Get a faster 486 processor they took them all the way up to 100mhz and you can get one of those cheap.. But you will want to upgrade soon after you do this. (cheap fix)

2) Get a replacement motherboard with a pent 133, 166, or 200 on it.. If you check the for sale forums every once and awhile someone will have one, and will let it go for pretty cheap. ~20-30 or so.. You already have all the components you need (you may need some newer ram) but you have a Power supply/floppy/hard drive.. This is what I have done with most of my 486's..

I think I have a 486DX/2 66 Laying around here somewhere.. if you want it let me know I will send it to you, it is not much, but it will be faster than what you have in there now..

I think the AMD 5x86 processors fit in the 486 socket, too

That's only valid assuming that the CPU is sitting in a ZIF socket. There were lots of CPUs that were not all the way up until the DX2/66s. It might be a little difficult to pull out the CPU and get one that fits, sometimes.

Yea, my old 486 didn't have a ZIF socket, I think it was a LIF or something like that. You needed a special chip puller to get it out, I didn't want to bother.
