I would just go with russiansensation's suggestion for that Awesome vapor-x 4890 on the cheap. Then you're reaching stock 5850 terrirtory, and much higher than even OC'ed 5770 terrirtory, for what 10 or 15 bucks more?

I would go with the 5770 for these reasons. The chances of the 5770 outperforming the 4870/gtx260 with driver improvements and with direct x 11 games is very likely. I've noticed improved performance with every Amd card over time. With direct x 11 games, I think the improvement will be even greater.

Your answer is simple!

1. Buy both
2. See which one you think smells better
3. Ship me the one you don't like

If you look at game benchmarks and not just at hardware specs the 5850 does not outperform the 4890 by a tremendous margin. In fact, the margins are often smaller than the delta between 5770 to 4870, never mind 4890. This may change with better drivers, but at the moment $/performance is squarely with the 4890.

um the 5770 is only about 10% slower than a 4870. the 4890 is certainly not that close to the 5850 is it?

overall that doesnt change what I said.

Well this is what you said:

And from canucks bench (stock cards) that isn't the case:
Left for Dead 1920x1200 Max 4xAA/16xAF
card -min -avg
5770 - 37 - 62
4890 - 59 - 84
5850 - 60 - 98

In computerbase.de's review, summarized performance in all games at 1920 x 1200 4xAA shows:
5770 @ 100%
4890 @ 121%
5850 @ 148%.
IMO, the 4890 sits comfortably between the 5770 and 5850 when all cards are at stock speeds. As you suggested, the 4890 is a little closer to the 5770, but not "much much closer" than it is to the 5850.

Starting to think I should go GTX 260 as it's on a similar par, then upgrade again early next year.

I would buy the HD5850 and save money by buying Core i5. Then (if you want to upgrade) wait on either a 32nm i5 or 32nm i7 instead of another GPU.

This way you would be combining high performance energy efficient GPU with high performance energy efficient CPU.

On top of that the 32nm CPU will really wake up that HD5850.

The 4890 is a lot closer to 5770 (than hd5850). Theese frame rate % are also dependent on the CPU.

If a faster CPU was being used the HD5850 would pull even farther away from Hd4890.

yes, it is very important to keep you 5850 from falling asleep...

I made a mistake. There isn't going to be a 32nm Westmere quadcore.

Why not buy the hd5770 and when prices drop, buy a 2nd one or sell the hd5770 for a hd5850 down the road?

Opting with the i5 750 over the i7 860 might be a smarter choice. That extra money would allow you to go for the 5850. To put it plainly:

i7 860 + GTX 260 < i5 750 + 5850

I would wager the latter would have superior performance for games 99% of the time. Anyone disagree? If the OP is very interested in getting better performance in non-gaming tasks it's quite clear that the former configuration is better, but for game's it's quite heavily in the other combo's favour.

I guess it's too late since you bought the CPU already, I think. But just keep in mind that it was probably an unwise choice if gaming is your top priority. IMO, an i5 750 is "good enough" for everything else, but to each his own. There's a reason Tom's CPU Gaming guide says anything above the 750 is a waste. That extra $90 makes a bigger impact going into better graphics cards - there's actually no doubt about this.

Since you already have the CPU, try to get an HD 4870, if you can't, get an HD 5770 which offers you the 90% of the HD 4870 performance plus DX11.

The only other possible negatives with the 260 would be squealing and future driver support considering the cards are already EOLed after a very brief time in the sun.

Even though the drivers will probably continue to run on the hardware, how much weight do you think NV execs will place on making sure the software is properly optimized and tested considering the GT200 holds about 1% share on valve's steam survey?

For you the 5770 is significantly cheaper than the 4870, so it's a no brainer. Look for a 4850. =) For those of us in the states the 5770 offers lower than 4870 performance at a 4890 price. So utterly not worth it.
