This thing is cooking at 80deg C. The fan on this thing is just idling along. How can I adjust the fan speed on this card to get it a little cooler. Its heating the rest of my case up causing everything else to run hot.

Same thing on my HTPC with a 4850.

Thanks.

80C is pretty normal for that card (if your talking under load). You should try to get some better case ventilation as well as speeding up the 4870's fan.

use rivatuner or AT Tray tools

my 4870 runs at 80C and my 4870x2 runs at 60C as the 4870's fan is stuck on high .. together they resonate to make the MOST IRRITATING *whine* ever!

imo you want high 70s
--ideally for your ears and your GPU - AMD says the 4X80 is built to take 80s

my sanity is safe - that friggin whine is down quite a lot .. they still resonate together - i wonder if AMD's engineers actually listened to a pair of these fans running in tandem
- separately they are fine

the latest ATi tray tools includes auto fan control

*finally*

it is Beta - from Tuesday - [they all are beta] and it looks like Adams put a lot of work into it for 4870
-Riva Tuner's latest [i could find] says it does not yet work with Cat 8.9

Idle - Desktop.

I looked into the "fan fix". Found a page that said to create a profile after tuning... did that, but can't locate the XML. Not in the DIR it said it was in. \username\Application Data\ATI\ACE

Still looking into it.

Found it. The one web page I was on had the wrong path.

\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Profiles

Wow... that thing can get LOUD!

hehe. I set it to 45% and it cooled it down quite well.

I guess with it "manual" though, it won't speed up if I am gaming and it gets hot aye?

Hmm... have to create a profile that bumps the speed up a tad when I want to game.

Thanks all.

==================

Now if I can just resolve my issue of "My computer won't shut off" (ASUS P5Q Pro).

Hey, that thing is Great! Love the tiered fan speed control. Does this load on windows bootup? Or do I have to activate it everytime I boot?

Apoppin, thanks for the link, but do you know if it's possible to get ATI Tray Tools to run under Vista x64? When I run it, it complains about not being digitally signed and thus not getting low-level driver access.

Yea, 54c at 35%.

I set Tray tools to run at 35% from 50c to 70c... then jump to 42%.

But at desktop it runs a cool 54c. Much happier with that.

THANKS GUYS!

Apoppin - I figured out how to make it load everthing on windows startup via profile.

MY X3 overheated suddenly and i almost lost my MB also
- 65C for a case temp!!!

i am watching it closely and my case is open with desktop fans cooling everything .. seems OK, even the X2

Phew

the 48xx definitely all need a second revision with a new perhaps 2 slot design. Saw too many people complaint of the temp issue.

it's software, not hardware...

Sapphire's new dual-slot card with revised board layout is much, much cooler. Check out a review of it. It's not the chip but the crappy cooler that is software dialled-down to quietness which can't deal with cooling it properly.

Get rivaTuner and follow the guide here http://forums.guru3d.com/showt...ht=fan+speed+rivatuner

The only difference is I spread out the temperature threshold to fan speed ratio. For example. If you want 45% speed at 75-80c and 50% at 80+c I change the threshold to 75-78c = 45% and 80+ = 50%

This way I idle at 50c with a fan speed of 34% and when it hits high temps rivatuner will ramp up the fan.

I have it set as follows

50-60c = 34%
64-80c = 45%
83-88c = 50%
90c+ = 60%

Another option is to use RBE 1.15/ATi Flash and flash the bios so the fan throttles better. While your in there you can enable superior powerplay (4870 powerplay doesn't lower the voltage, this option will set it up) and up the overclock limits on CCC. This worked for me while I waited for my new thermalright Trad2 and iandh heatsinks. Too bad the Trad2 was defective from the manufacture.

I'm against flashing the bios with non-standard ones (i.e across manufacturer lines).
