Yeah I actually did some more testing last night and kept the fan up to 100%. I was running OCCT and able to get the GPU up to 950. Temps never really exceeded 74C or so. However, when I ran furmark and empire total war, it would crash. I guess I'll just have to run some more tests with furmark tonight, as it seems to be a more accurate test for stability (or perhaps i'm not using right settings for OCCT).

how hot are the vrms? i don't think this is an issue with the hd4890 as they have supposedly reworked them to make them cooler, however, its worth taking a look at.

FURMARK Torture 12+ hours at max of 51c
Played COD4 for an hour
Played Titan Quest for an hour
Played UT3 for an hour

Card is watercooled with a new EK block purchased from FrozenCPU.
Card is voltmodded 1.375v via rivatuner and plugins.

This is some video card for $185 after all the rebate, instant and MSCB.

Good Luck on the OC!

Dave

I have the Sapphire version (I bought it for $217 shipped before the MSI deal popped up ), with the same GPU water block as you (sweet nickel-plated E.K from Frozen CPU), and a similar O.C. I have mine running at:

1025/1085 1.45 V in 3D apps
240/240 1.03 V in 2D

Best of both worlds! Wicked fast in games, cool and low-power at idle.

My VRMs run around 70C under water, while the core is closer to 40C. This is just running the ATI Tray Tools renderer, not Furmark. Still hot, but people on air are seeing 100C+ I hear.

EDIT-I just tried Furmark, and some of the VRMs are hitting 100C even with water cooling! This program is nasty.

I have found Furmark to crash my system more than any game will. For instance at settings that crash in Furmark (and cause a VPU recovery) I can game in Crysis or Oblivion without any issues. I've given up on Furmark for now. Even with my old HD4830, I never had a single crash in any game when overclocked to 700 Mhz, however this would crash in Furmark within 50 seconds.

How are you overvolting the card? I can undervolt with ATT Tray tools (which is great for 2D - the card is finally quiet on the windows desktop, now), but not overvolt. Did you update the Bios, or flash to the ASUS Bios? I can't edit the Bios with RBE Editor, either.

Even if I could overvolt, I probably wouldn't, as my card is already running hot. I'm just curious, though.

The Rivatuner add-on Voltage Factory, it's very simple. You tell it what voltage to use for what state (idle/load). Then I use ATI Tray Tools to set separate 2D/3D clocks (I couldn't get this feature to work within Rivatuner, the 'Hardware Acceleration' monitor never read anything).

When switching memory clocks, I do get a brief screen flicker, but since I only see it when launching/exiting a game, I don't care. It's worth it for the ~30W lower idle power consumption. Since I control my radiator fans based off water temperature, less idle power=less noise.

Rivatuner doesn't like 64-bit Windows 7. Thinking about it I could never get it working right even on Vista 64. It looks like others are getting it to work fine? I don't know why it doesn't work for me. (I tried disabling driver signing, of course)

Does ATI tool work natively with 64-bit Windows?

I've been using it on vista 64 with no issues. Was having some problems with Rivatuner myself though - just ended up ditching it and using catalyst console / ati tool.

you expectations needs readjustment

21 FPS average in Crysis with a single stock Diamond 4890-xOC - all settings maxed at 19x12 with 4xAA/16xAF
- beats a GTX280 overclocked

what games do you play that interest you?

i just *completed* 13 GAME benches to compare stock 4890 with 4870, 4870-X2 and GTX280
- now i am rerunning them at 4890's max oc

21 as an average for a single GPU is good for maxed out 19x12 Crysis - 16x10 is totally playable if you drop AA to 2x and maybe set shaders to 'high'
- Tri-Fire is needed for 19x12 pretty much

Appopin what CPU did you mate your 4890 with? Pretty good score there ('06).

I am still at 950/1150 and no complaints yet. I saw AT has an article up today about 4890 OC. Almost linear performance increase with OC looks quite nice.
I'm kinda pissed that I can't get RivaTuner to work in 64-bit Windows. :|

i got an engineering sample of q9550s which is stable at 4.0 Ghz with 1.4v
- C2Q kicks ass over e8600 at 4.25Ghz so i sold it

i have the Diamond HD4890-xOC [although Diamond sent it for review, it is the regular retail box and not particularly a "good OCer"]

when i ran 4890 against 4870 at stock i was not impressed
- when i overclocked 4890 it became a geforce Killer and it whips GTX280 [at stock clocks] in some of my benches.

it is an OC'ing monster. i am getting GTX275 tomorrow to see if it can match 4890's performance when it is also OCed to the max
- that one i will test also at 8xAA

I noticed the first annoyance with this card. When memory is overclocked, I get screen flashing when an application activates 'Performance 2D' clock speed. Apparently this card was designed

249/975 - Desktop 2D/3D
500/975 - HD playback (and presumably other apps that can use GPU)
850/975 - Full accelerated 3D

Now, this happens only when memory is overclocked. When I start playback of H.264 video, the whole screen flashes/jerks for a split second. (right when clock speed change occurs) I noticed that core clock doesn't affect this, and HD 3850 doesn't do it either - so I am assuming it's either a hardware issue (DDR5) or a Catalyst issue. :frown:

Can anyone else verify this? Unfortunately I'm using this card in Windows 7 environment and don't have a Vista installation available at the moment.

My 4870 also does the flickering when clocks are changed. No matter if it's the ddr5 or GPU clocks, the flickering still occurs. It doesn't really bothers me, but I'm wondering if it will somehow affect the card on the long term.
