48GB on an x58 board?

This is for all the naysayers and for anyone tempted to try it but are afraid. Yeah, it CAN work. I won't say it will for you 100%, but chances are if you google and have an updated bios, you'll be fine.

For those that ask why, Because WHY NOT!

Wow I didn't realize the 6x4GB and 3x8GB kits were so close in price. This actually makes sense.

Still, I'm happy with the 6x4GB kit I snagged on Black Friday for $90.

These replaced a ~$80 set from black friday as well. Ordered three 2x4gb kits of DDR3-1600 but since they mostly ran at 1333 anyway, I figured i'd go for the volume.

I haven't tested it yet, but when I went from 12 to 24gb, it cut the processing time by about 35-40%. I'm hoping to see the same gains with this bump as well, but really expect maybe 25% or so.

Why 48-64 GB RAM?

Because I've spent more on one night of dinner than what max RAM costs, that's why!

Waiting for "flooding" so ram prices can triple overnight, then mysteriously stay there 2 years later...

I quit OC'ing a while ago. I got tired of all the hours of tweaking and reinstalling corrupt OS's for that extra few hundred MHz then realized that after all the time and effort I put in to it, I could just pay the little extra and buy the better CPU and not deal with the hassles.

This is very cool that you got that amount of ram working which most would have said is unsupported on the x58.

My current workloads are fine with 12GB of ram but I will keep a note of this.

Another question does anyone have 24GB's of ram running at 1600mhz at 1T on a x58 board?

I do. 160 BCLK * 2:10 ratio at 1T command rate. No issues CPU @ 4GHz, uncore @ 3360. CPUz reads timings as 9-9-9-24 128 1T.

I'm currently doing 200 bclk for my 4ghz overclock. Someone mentioned to me that a higher bclk does give you slightly higher performance but I didn't check if this was true.

One thing the lower bclk does give you however is a much lower idle speedstep downclock.

My chip will idle at 2.4ghz with the 200 bclk.

What is your idle at 160 bclk?

Thanks for sharing this, it was one of the reasons I was shying away from x58 for ESX - I could do 32GB on a "lesser" platform...

I've seen some VERY low cost x58 setups lately on various FS/FT forums. Still a very stout platform and I was tempted to grab another. Why? because WHY NOT! :biggrin:
