49ers pick up option to keep Alex Smith through 2010

As an avid 49er fan, I don't blame Alex Smith solely for the bad play the team has had. Having a new offensive coordinator each of your first three years isn't that easy.

But, as an overall #1 pick, I except you to take the lead and not make excuses blaming the Head Coach or your line. As the leader of the offense, you should take it upon yourself you make those you play with better and earn the ridulous $$$$ you got with being #1.

At times, he's looked good, but those times are few at best. I consider him a bust and would have much rather have had Aaron Rodgers. I think Urban Meyer proved he was behind the success of Utah and not Alex with what he's done in FL.

What do you think? Good choice? Or bust?

Too early to tell.

He's a young QB on a bad team. I think that is his biggest problem.

Give him a couple of more years before you judge him. And what has Aaron Rodgers shown? Nothing. He's been sitting behind Farve.

Favre is retiring in 2013, you heard it here first.

can't speak too much for the line and I agree he needs better support. Though we did pick up Darrel Jackson for him and Battle has proven to be solid for him as well.

Maybe my expectations were too high as I expected better play from him as Gore was a factor to be deal with (for defenses).

As a 10yr season ticket holder, most of my frustration have been with York because he didn't pump a dime into the franchise until he decided to move the team and is not spending the money to get a new Santa Clara stadium on the ballot, but that's another story.

I brought up Aaron because the #1 pick was between him and Alex and (imo and somewhat in retrospect), Aaron would've been a better choice...he at least played in a competitive conference.

Well said! Give him a couple years of stability and then re-evaluate...it's just too early to tell.

Heh. There have been plenty of highly-touted QBs from competitive conferences that have come in and been busts. There have also been plenty of unknown QBs from uncompetitive conferences that have excelled.

You just never know with the NFL.

I'm glad the Panthers cut Foster and Carr and re-signed Muhsin, might be trading Kris Jenkins as well.

btw...before we go off in a different direction, i wanted to discuss whether or not picking up the clause through 2010 was a good idea.

I just wonder if (forgot name) from ND can be had for cheap since Cleveland wants to resign Derek Anderson...not saying that's the cure, but prob a cheaper alternative.

Two words: Kyle Boller (see also: Ryan Leaf).

I am a 49ers fan (and my family has had season tickets since 1946) and a Cal fan. I am glad the 49ers did not pick Rodgers because I think he is over-rated and would not be doing much better than Smith.

The problem with Smith is not an actual problem with Smith. He was picked No. 1, which was totally out of his control. If he was not the overall No. 1, he would probably not be looked upon as much as a bust.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, they picked a bad year to have the No. 1 pick.

They aren't going to trade him until they see if Anderson was a one season wonder

Foster was a beast....when healthy. The problem was...he never seemed to be healthy.

Was def a bad year to have the #1 pick. 1 yr earlier: Carson Palmer, 1yr later: Reggie Bush. Or really, Leinart should've came out and not play his senior year

This seems to be another bad year for a number one pick as there isn't a clear #1 player...especially at the skill positions. McFadden comes the closest but Ryan seems like he'd be a mid 1st round pick in most other years.

I'm not sold on Ryan at all.

Big school QB's don't mean much in the NFL, and Utah played a handful of Pac 10 and Big East teams which he did very well against.

Bottom line - They need to seriously add talent on the O line and and WR - Arnaz Battle is not a #1 WR talent. Gore is nice, Davis is nice at TE - need about 3 more good O linemen

I attended or watched every game of his College career. He is MAD talented. With some decent people around him he can make it in the NFL. He was 20-1 as a starter. 43 touchdows and 7 interceptions. Urban Meyer called him the best qb in the nation.

I find it unfortunate that Smith would be the scapegoat for the third-rate 49ers organization. He's had a poor offensive line, a poor running game (mostly because of the line), and no receivers. Add to that a defense that keeps them on the field (supposed to be the other way around) and an utter lack of coaching / development, it's amazing that he's done as well as he has.

There was a pre-SB article about Brady where it was mentioned anecdotally that A.Smith was desperately seeking offseason coaching, since he was getting little to no on-season quarterbacking / mechanics coaching. It's like they're trying to ruin him to cover up the management deficiencies on this team.

No skin off my back though - Go Hawks!

Nature of the position. QB gets all the glory or all of the blame whether they had a hand in it or not.

Rodgers has looked good in the limited time (remember the Dallas game) he's played. So in retrospect, I'd want him over Smith. Course, his supporting cast >>>> the 9ers. But Hill's done pretty damn good in relief with the same team, so I can't help but say Smith's a bust. I bought his jersey way too early, and am just about ready to plaster "Bust" over "Smith" to have it read: A. Bust

Sorry to say since I'm a die-hard 9er fan. Here's hoping I'm wrong...or Hill's the next best thing.

The bolded text is the part that worries me about Smith.
