Everyone I tell that 30 FPS makes me sick, automatically assumes this means all forms of media. It doesn't. In fact, consoles at 30 FPS don't make me sick, and neither does watching other people play at 30 FPS.

30 FPS makes me sick due to latency when using an input device which feels very connected to your movements. I feel sick if playing a 1st person, or over the shoulder view game when the mouse is used to control your view. My best guess it is related to latency when in a near virtual environment. It is very similar to motion sickness.

Smoothness does not appear to be the cause, or at least, not the only cause of the sickness I get. Choppy video can make me feel sick, but latency appears to be the primary cause with gaming. I don't play consoles enough to give a good answer, but for the most part, I have not felt sick using them, but pushing a button to turn does not give you the same virtual reality feel that a mouse gives.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't read carefully enough.

So no going to the movies for you, then?
I thought I explained it very clear.

I do not get sick from movies, consoles or watching others play at 30 FPS.

I get sick if I am using a mouse to control the view in a game that is 1st person or over the shoulder viewed. It is the latency that causes it in virtual environments. I assume the Oculus Rift will also make me sick and anything that gives you fine control of your characters view.

So, to summarize, the issue is not with low framerates, but with high input lag.

trisli titan could bearly get it done right - let alone a single 7970 or a single 680. lmfao.

until all you single gpu 4k gamer post solid youtube video evidence.

gonna call it BS and chill out from this this thread. until then. have fun convincing yourself it is all that!

tri-sli titans could more than manage a completely stable, solid 30 fps at least, and probably even 60 fps at very high settings, but not without constant dips. it really boils down to personal subjectivity. for me, a constant, or near constant 30 fps, is perfectly fine in third person games or non-competitive fps games like crysis 2/3, metro, etc..

dual hd 7970's or 680's can run most, if not all of the latest graphically intensive games at high settings, or even very high settings and still managed at least 30 fps at 4k.

i run crysis 3 at high settings w/very high textures/4k resolution and average 30 fps constant, and that is fine by me, but some people absolutely need 60 fps.

How mouse is related to whatever is showing on a screen is beyond me.

Because a mouse allows every little movement you make change the view instantly. A joystick is like opening your garage door with a button. You don't get the same feed back you do with a mouse. One feels like you are changing the view, the other is like you are telling something to change the view.

For the most part, yes. Unfortunately, low FPS causes addition input lag.

True. Thankfully, changing the flip queue size (AMD) or pre rendered frames (Nvidia) has the potential to mitigate input lag. It works great in Planetside 2

My displays are 3x Acer H233H and 1x Vizio E421VO.

I don't have a youtube video of BF3 at 4k, nor do I have any desire of making one. BF3 has already been benched on a single GTX680 @ 4k on both high and ultra presets.

http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2012/6/18/the-4k-graphics-card-shootout.aspx

no need for the yt video - that review is more than sufficent.

fact: nvidia surround + nvidia accessory does not equal 4k rendering. accessory display is 2d UI and not rendering.

back to 4k rendering.

bf3 high = 28avg n 17dip
bf3 ultra = 21avg n 7dip

if that is honestly enjoyable/playable to you. super power to you!

I'm really not sure how those settings mitigate latency. They are used to smooth out game with a side effect of adding latency, or if you drop them as low as possible, they re-frame from adding additional latency.

I guess it is important not to have them render ahead to not add additional latency.

You obviously did not read what I said. My 4k resolution is a custom downsampled resolution. Its not spanning across all 4 displays. Each display is configured to go to 4k on its own.

Also, when I do play BF3, I use the high preset and no AO with an overclocked profile, which will obviously net a higher average than 28fps, and is very enjoyable to me.

carry on. no need to continue debating. when one cannot comprehend "rendering" 8.3MP (aka 4k).

20 fps with Titan shows that 4K gaming makes no sense anyway untill at least next generation GPUs

And the idea of running triple SLI or CF to get into 60 fps must result in some crazy microstutter

Obsoleted is a strong word, and it's mostly in the mind of the gamer I think. Up until I bought my 770s, I was able to play the latest games at very high to ultra IQ settings at 2560x1440 on my nearly 3 year old 580 SLI..

If you don't go crazy with the AA, then GPUs can age nicely. Overclocking can also obviously extend the lifespan of your GPUs in terms of performance..

indeed. I was just reading a SlickDeals post about a $39.99 GTX260, and there were people wowing the deal.

If you stay semi current with your hardware, there is always a market to resell it a year later. The key is buying and selling at the right points on the downward price spiral. Whatever you are selling, it will be a major upgrade for someone
