Hey all,

I'm currently looking to buy a new monitor, as im with a 23in 1080p atm.

I have R9 290's Crossfired, My question is, would 4k be feasible at decent frames? If not... What 1440p monitor would be the sweet spot?

Currently the samsung 4k monitor I can get for the same price as most 1440p monitors.

Budget of around 500 tops.

So down to the bare bones.. Could the 4k monitor uphold the frames? or should I go with a 1440p instead?

If the game supports CF just turn AA down to FXAA or and most games you should be able to run at everything else maxed and still hit ~60fps.

I personally think 4k is not mature enough yet and that our GPUs are not quite powerful enough for a buttersmooth experience with games maxed out at this res. Since you are not on Nvidia hardware, I'd forget the ROG SWIFT and get an overclockable 2560x1440 IPS display, like the Overlord Tempest in my sig.

I would advise you to wait for Freesync monitors to be available in Q1 2015.

http://techreport.com/news/26919/freesync-monitors-will-sample-next-month-start-selling-next-year

As for 4k vs 1440p you should be able to max most games without MSAA at 4K. As you know if a game does not support CF well then you are going to have to scale down settings. here is an R9 290X CF (1080 Mhz) doing very well at 4K. R9 290 CF should be 5 - 7% slower at same clocks.

When I say butter smooth, I am talking about frame rates above 60fps, btw

Thanks for the feedback! So as far as 1440p vs 4k goes.. 4k IS feasible. Then suggested your monitor.. Is it reliable? I'm going to be honest, I have not heard of overlord D:

The only 4K monitor I would consider is $999 BenQ IPS. If you can't afford that, I'd save a bit more for a 32" 3200:

I can't stand playing on a small monitor. Even though it's over your budget, over 5-8 years you'll likely keep that monitor, it works out to only $22-35 extra per year over your budget. Once you go 30" and up for PC gaming, you are unlikely to consider any 24-27 inch monitors.

Mine has run flawlessly, but certainly, do your research first

Alright thanks.I would love to get that BenQ monitor you mentioned sensation, But I am dead on a budget of 500 :\

So down to the bare wire... Besides the overlord which I am highly considering
Which would be the "better" pick? The Asus, BenQ, or the 4k Samsung.

Once again, I am also considering that overlord monitor... But of these 3 monitors what would be advised to get? OR ANY Other monitors people are willing to recommend?

I just bought the Asus after watching a number of reviews on it and comparisons to other monitors in that range.

I must say I'm VERY, very impressed with it. I have a Microcenter near me and they had it and a few others on display, and in a store setting, I did not really get a feel for how nice the monitor was, but I trusted the reviews and went ahead and ordered it anyway.

For gaming it's fantastic. The out-of-the-box presets are excellent (aside from brightness, which is WAY too high).
Turned down to normal levels, light bleed is not really detectable, colors are vibrant, and I was impressed with the complete lack of noticeable blur/ghosting in the games I've played (Far Cry 3, Skyrim, Arma 3).

I haven't seen the BenQ on display so I can't comment. I will say the reviews of the PB278Q were so glowing I took the plunge and have not regretted it.

You can order one of the new Qnix 320QHD monitors. Got three of them infront of me and they are pretty good.

That's one of several new 27" IPS 4k monitors seemingly about to appear. Some relatives of that at 27" planned by Asus/BenQ at least. Would definitely be worth waiting for those if going 4k I'd think. Can't be long with the Dell ones seemingly up on their website now.
(And some 30" ones like the BenQ one.).

Oooh. Thank you for mentioning that dell. Also thanks for your input on the asus monitor!... kinda stuck still on what to get. If i can play on 4k with decent settings ill hop on 4k... but if it is advised to stay with 1440p ill just go with the asus.. aggh

If you don't need something immediately, then as raghu suggested wait it out a bit.

Here's the thing, maybe you get something that catches your eye around black friday and is an amazing deal (so you have minimal regrets), or you wait and more options come out that might better suit your desires.

Yeah.. I am considering on waiting also... but as im looking at black friday deals... i am a bestbuy elite member so i get early access to there deals the monday before friday. That samsung 4k is 480 bucks. That is what really is catching my eye...

But as stated.. 1440p might be better. But also waiting..

If you do go 4k, do NOT get rid of your 23" screen. 4k makes OS text look tiny on anything below 32". At 27" you're talking illegibly small

how about 4k vs. 3440x1440? A lot of people still don't think about the "other" 1440p. You couldn't pry my 21:9 from my cold dead fingers. Well, you could but it better be replaced with a new one =P

4k scaling works fine (basically) in everything that I use or care about.

I would not recommend 1440p since it's overpriced relative to it's positioning (imo) between 1080p/4k.

4k is amazing and there are some inconsistencies etc. but the increase in fidelity is well worth it imo.

I would also advise waiting to see the free sync monitors. 4k is demanding but 290 crossfire can slice through it without aa and it's fun to put your gpus to good use. Free sync would be a great fit for 4k since it's an ideal use case.

@Black Octagon, have you seen 4k or are you simply satisfied with 1440p and therefore recommending it?

Does increasing the DPI... fix the "unreadable" text on 4k? That's all i'm seeing what you should do.

That's going to depend on your settings and how demanding the game is.

Always look at the reviews on various site to make that call. I personally thing GPU's are not really there for 4K. But i like to have over 60FPS (anything less and i can tell specially under 50FPS), i guess Gsync and maybe freesync should fix that issue. And i like to turn everything up (eye candy whore here).

Thanks for all the replies, I'm going to probably wait until the major cybermonday/black friday deals pop up and go with whatever has the better deal.

Thanks! Opinions are still welcome

I didn't bother reading through the entire thread, but if your budget is still at $500, I would not go 4k. You're going to have to spend twice that at least on a 4k display that is big enough to use as an everyday monitor. You will be miserable trying to read text on a 28" 4k monitor. 1440p is definitely the way to go. You will get a much better quality 1440p monitor at $500 than you will 4k.
