unless there's a feature on 8 that you absolutely must have, i'd stick with 6 or 7.1.2

Dont do it. I did 7 on a 4 and it rendered the phone pretty much useless. I imagine 8 on a 4s would yield the same results.

7.0 was slow on the iPhone 4.
7.1.x was also slow, but nowhere near as bad.

I don't recommend 8.0.x on the iPad 2/iPad mini (and iPhone 4S), but I'm hoping it will get the 7.1 speedup treatment with a future version. Dunno about 8.1, but the changelog doesn't mention performance improvements.

Don't. It essentially killed my iPad 2 which I imagine isn't to different than the 4S internals.

Essentially killed? We have a Mini with the same internals, and while some animations jank more on iOS8, the usability is about the same. It's more annoyance than becoming unusable, unlike the 4 on iOS7 or the first iPad on I think 5.

8.1 improved things a bit, but it's not as big a change as 7.1. OP, I'd maybe wait for 8.2 or something. Not much you're missing yet anyways. The third party keyboards were big for me since I love swiftkey, but I found they're like betas on iOS, not worth using at this point, missing basic things like space to insert prediction.

I own a 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3. I have updated all of them to iOS 8.1. Here are my observations:

I don't see much difference in speed between 7.1.3 and 8.1. My 4S runs fine, especially after disabling email in Spotlight Search. My iPad 2 also runs surprisingly well! I don't have any complaints with it at all. The iPad 3 struggles a bit with iOS 8. It is certainly not unusable but the visual effects lag.

I posted this in the iOS 8 thread already, but people online have demonstrated that iOS 8.1 is still noticeably slower than iOS 7.1.2 on A5-endowed iOS hardware, even though 8.1 is faster than 8.0.x.

However, iOS 8.1.1 is due to drop soon, and its description specifically mentions that iOS 8.1.1 addresses performance issues for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

I am currently on 7.1.2 for my iPad 2 because I found 8.0 too slow, but I am hopeful that iOS 8.1.1 will be fast enough that I can justify upgrading to it. And if not 8.1.1, then 8.2 or whatever.

Same situation, waiting for the next update as I would love to be able to use Family Share for apps and linking all the accounts to one card.

I have waaaaaaay to many passwords for myself and refuse to buy another download of msecure for my wife so she can add her gazillion passwords to it instead of pestering me about her "People Magazine" password. Not to mention the dozen or so apps our son "needs" between the phones and his itouch.

Better to stick with an earlier iOS like 7.1.2 then go into the 8 series.

It will just slow down your 4S even more and you cannot go back once you have upgraded your iPhone OS!

Is there a feature you cannot do without in the 8?

Friend of mine has a 4S and recently applied the 8.1.1 update and the UI is back to being pretty smooth all around and it performs well.

So far on a 4s and iPad 2, it has been a better experience than 7 for me. Either 7 was so incredibly bad that 8 seems better, I'm not sure.

Almost all visual enhancements are off, but it seems like most of my apps have stopped crashing as frequently.

The 4s appears to switch between 3G (sprint) and wifi quite often, but it doesn't really matter as I don't use much data and seems to only do it when in areas of weak service.

On the ipad2, it has been pretty smooth overall.

iPad 2 in few months will be 4 years old device, and iPhone 4s is already over 3 years old device. I am impressed with how well iOS 8.1.1 is running on those devices. yes, they are not as fast as they were brand new with the original OS, but they are not bad or unusable either.

I think I jinxed myself. Safari now takes its time to load up the standard keyboard to type an address. Oh well. Im stuck with this for awhile.
