I would never have been allowed to call a teacher "teach" at that age, or even later.

Nor would it have occurred to me to.

Miss Price, or Mister York, or if I didn't know them, Ma'am or Sir.

I'm thinking the same about everyone else's post.

If you think the way to create a healthy learning environment is through intimidation and authoritarianism you're foolish. But it depends on the student. If you have a bunch of thug high school kids, yes then you would be correct. But a 4th grade class should be a fun place to be, not some 1950s style classroom that resembles a detention hall. This is why so many of these so called "liberal" schools that a becoming more popular today where the students choose their interests and studies and learn more independently and with less structured classes are so much more successful than modern "stand in line and do as I say" which only breeds a nation of jerks (and ATOT posters).

right, because our school systems are soooo much better than they used to be.

Answer this: How exactly does that justify the modern situation with this student?

Because you were not allowed to do something, does that mean this generation should be under the same restriction?

Only pricks and assholes try to justify something with "when I was your age, I couldn't do that." That's just taking revenge against the modern generation for the wrongs of a previous generation. Those kinds of people make the worst parents and even worse teachers.

Uh they are. More kids are going to college, less kids are using drugs compared to their parents generation (the baby boomers) and kids these days have better developed personalities.

Although it's more extreme these days, kids are either really smart and mature or super super dumb and violent. In the past kids came out of a plastic mold.

The teacher, though I do believe he could have handled it a little more diplomatically. We don't know if the student had a history of disrepect to teachers though, this is something that could have been building for a while.

Just because more kids are going to college doesn't mean school has gotten any better. Increases in financial aid, more loans, decreasing requirements all contribute to more students in college.

Drugs? I'm not sure what that has to do with anything.

And how do you measure a generation's personality? Personally, I find that I'd much rather chat with an older person than some high school punk with an entitlement disorder.

This is not really a news story, at least not in the region this was in (central Florida, where I grew up). I remember teachers in elementary school threatening to break body parts or knock us "upside the head" if we misbehaved. I think these teachers need to be cleaned out of the system, but it seems to be part of the culture of the less educated teachers to talk like that.

It would be more beneficial to everyone if we cleaned out the kids that cause teachers to threaten to bust heads and simply put them into an apprenticeship program. One that perhaps teaches these miscreants in a method most suitable for their future, "paper or plastic" and "would you like to super-size that?"

Let the other well adjusted kids learn and become productive in society. Some kids simply should be left behind.

More kids are going to kids because kids these days have their future more well thought out. They want to do things with their life. Go places, see things. Look at how many college kids these days when their young travel to foreign places, seeing the world, even paying on their own dime. You didn't see that 30 years ago.

And you say you'd rather chat with an older person, we're not talking about older people. Would you rather chat with a 18 year old from 1970 or from 2010? This generation has access to more information via the internet which has made them more globally minded and expanded their cultural perspectives which builds character and personality.

When I was in 6th grade my math teacher took me out of the class room and shoved me into the wall. Told me to stop fucking around in class and take it serious because I was to bright to be fucking around. I told her "I could get you fired for this" she said "I don't care." So I just let it be.

I bet you paid attention in class and turned out well. Am I right?

"So what are we doing today, teach?

what is wrong with that?

Yes there is. Mr. Martin or whatever their name is the correct way to address a teacher. I was very close to many of my teachers and would never have dreamed of calling any of them "teach".

Once again foolish liberal parents are allowing their children to get away with disrespect, instead of properly disciplining them. This kind of parenting is contributing to the downfall of America. Everyone knows this.

Wow, I actually agree with the troll. Except for the fact that not everyone knows this.

Children actually respond a lot better to reason and CONSEQUENCE then yelling loudly. It's the kids who are disrespectful and have no consequences that are the problem, because they never learn that it's not OK to do that. She calls him teach ? Tell her sternly that isn't appropriate and have her do some extra homework. Problem solved.

Then you have no idea about human relationships and no don't understand what "real" respect is.

True respect is not out of fear or authoritarianism. Respect is earning on an individual basis, not "by no choice of my own, you happen to be my teacher, so I owe you respect."

Seriously? Extra homework for something like that? If there was such a rule, and she was not aware of it, and she violated that rule, no punishment should be admitted. Just the rule needed to be explained if that was inappropriate.

I have a feeling you threw in that "extra homework" comment to appease jerks on this thread who probably grew up with drill sargent parents and teachers and deep down they resent that and want to "pay back" the punishment they received on anther generation. You see this a lot in parenting. Some parents abuse their kids because they were abused, out of anger of their own abuse.

Teacher is a douche. Judging from what little information we know, if the girl was being disrespectful, and it was the first time, the teacher should warn her. She may have not known any better. If its a recurring problem, then the teacher should administer appropriate punishment to the girl until she learns to stop. Personal threats (if thats really what it was) are not the way to go.

And I have had a lot of teachers who did not mind being addressed informally. Granted, one should always address a person in a position of authority in a formal and respectful manner unless told by that person that it is okay to be more casual. But some kids obviously may have not caught on to this yet.

Ugh. Plenty of fail to go around, because it does seem the teacher overreacted, but I award the lion's share of fail to Laverne, the mom, for enabling her casually disrespectful little "baby" into claiming semi-bullshit victimhood.

You know what lesson her little "baby" is going to learn? That she can behave how she damn well pleases and not only will Laverne back her up, but she can probably get a teacher in hot water, to boot.
