Your outpost link doesn't work, but i'd suggest the Firestix anyway if you like OCing.

Since the Firestix were D9GMH lasted i checked, they'd actually likely outclock the 2x2 GB kits.

Of course, if you have plans for 4x2 GB, then you know which route you'd need.

Keep in mind that 4x1 memory setups generally run slower than their 2x2 equivalents.

prove it.

2x1GB is the same as 4x1GB for every test I did given the same settings.

It may not be noticeable to you, but it can happen depending on your setup:

Memory timings can decrease with more sticks, and that thread is comparing 2x512 vs. 4x512 mind you.

If you set the timings manually they won't change.

That's also on an AMD system where the memory controller is on the CPU.

I was in the same situation when i was building my CPU. I was originally going to go with 2x2gb Patriot Extreme Performance memory for about $210 AR. However, since I was planning on overclocking, I wasn't sure if the Patriots would be up to the task. I posted a thread here and someone gave a rough figure of about a 850-900mhz cap. I decided that I wanted extra headroom and went with 4x1gb Buffalo Firestix with D9 chips. I'm currently at DDR2800, 2 volts, 4-5-5-8 timings (lower timings untested). Everything works great for me here

Holy crap, what a coincedence. Anyway I see your running your Firestix pretty much stock? I think 850-900mhz with the Patriots is more than enough for my Q6600 as that would put it in the 3.6ghz range and I'd be lucky to get that. So I guess there's no advantage with going to 4x1 sticks since the price is about the same. Thanks everybody for your help.

Actually, the Firestix are sold as DDR2533s. I, however, bought used, because it guarantees that I'd be getting D9 memory. The previous owner ran them at DDR2 1050 with no problems... if I had a better processor (or a lower multiplier), that extra memory speed would be necessary (say, if I were running a 6300 at 500x7).
