I got this for $28.50 a couple of days ago. I think it was a daily special, or something like that.

i'm looking to get one of these and it seems a lot of them have problems w/ dvd dual drives and -R burning (which is what I want to use the enclosure for). can someone confirm or refute what these customers claim?

scaned the customer reviews of this product...regarding dvd burning.

Seems a few poeple have problems with +R or -R.....but majority don't have and issue.

Also, if you have a Dual format, why use -R?

I just recently bought one from AT's . I have no problem whatsoever with +R, +Rw and -R. Mine is 302U2F (USB 2.0 + 2 Firewire port) and Lite on 411s, also tried both connections via USB2.0 and Firewire Port.

Is the regular HD 3.5" or 5.25", I got a 80G HD from OM, and not sure if it will fit in there.
Tks.

Tks.

You can use the HD in either (assuming you have the brackets, in some cases) but CD/DVD drives will only fit in the 5.25". The 3.5" enclosures are usually a little bit cheaper and slimmer but the 5.25" ones give you more flexibility.

People have to take these user reviews with a grain of salt. Just because someone has to the ability to write a review, and describes a specific problem, doesn't mean they have any skill with computer peripheral installation. These people could be making stupid mistakes and before they realize the mistake, they fire off a bad review.

One thing to watch out for with this is that it is not self-powered; i.e., you need to plug it in. Most other USB 2.0 enclosures don't require that.

You should Check out this thread before buying any enclosure with Ali chipset. Many of us have experienced serious problems, whereas others have had no problems at all. *PERHAPS* an incompatiability with Nforce2 chipset.

Acortech has this one:
USB2.0 PCI Cards 2 Ports Retail Box
ALI M5273 USB2.0 PCI Cards 2 Ext. Ports and 2 Int. Pin Head Ports
Our Price $7
Shipping is free with the code that came up on the recent thread about the $1 USB cables (now $2--still hot with free shipping in my opinion). I think that thread got posted here but of course no coupons allowed so you'll have to go check FatWallet.com for the skinny (thread is here).

Microcenter has a card for $4.99 so if you got one local it's a good deal--otherwise shipping kills it.

Is this true for higher power using devices like hard drives and cd/dvd drives?

Um, are you sure the USB ports can power a hard drive/CD/DVD drive...?

Only 2.5" HDDs, AFAIK.

I think a separate power supply for the enclosure is best..a little reading on usb. The switching adapter for my USB 2.0 enclosure is 1.5A on the +5V and 1.8A on the 12V..so a USB port is usually .5A

One of the limitations of USB is the amount of +5 volt current available to supply attached peripherals. Normally, 500 milliamp is available at each host port and each powered external hub port. This amount of current is sufficient for most PC type peripherals like mice and keyboards. When the power requirements exceed the 500 milliamp limitation, external peripherals require the use of an external power supply (brick) to supply the necessary power requirements. This limitation takes away from the true ?plug-n-play? idea conceived for USB peripherals.

notice you have trouble determining a difference betwixt 3.5 inches and 5.25 inches..repost someplace else not needed here ..and as far as the ali chipset .. I agree as you have (and others) have pointed out it is a ymmv as noted in the 3.5" thread and elsewherehiya Sal ! and as far as powered or USB port-powered..I definitely prefer my external USB 2.0 to have its own power adapter...as always ymmv ..

I just got this and love it. I've been having fun plugging in a drawer full of old IDE drives just to see what's on them. Also worked fine with multiple different DVD and CD drives. Very quiet, I can hardly hear the fan. Maybe not the strongest construction, but a good deal if you have USB 2.0.

I like this enclosure, but one problem I am having involves using Ghost 2003. I can use this drive with Ghost, starting the program from SystemWorks 2003, but I can't get USB 2.0 speed. If I specifically choose USB 2.0 in the Ghost settings, it can't find any device on reboot. If I choose 1.1 it finds and uses the device. If I don't choose any USB, it still finds and uses the drive, but at USB 1.1 speed.

Any ideas on how to get full speed with Ghost 2003?
