The LCD alone for $95 + low shipping seems like a great deal in and of itself. $7.95 for 1-3 day express shipping too. Can't wait for someone to buy from these guys and let us all know what they think. Heck, that person might be me. I'd love to be able to pair this up with a portable DVD to take on the road. I really like that Sony, but I bet there's even a better deal out there on a unit w/o an expensive LCD included.

...the only thing saving me from busting out my credit card right now is that I don't know which vcd player to choose ( or have done any research on portable dvd players) anyone help??

er...8 bit color...that's 256 colors guys, needless to say you don't want to be viewing anything looking like a picture or movie on this screen !
I've got a 12bit (4,096 colors) screen on my iPaq and it's already nearly useless for photos !

a bit OT...but how would U hook this up to the hypothetical (in my case) MP3 box (in my case)?

is it just a VGA out or what?

this would ROCK for an MP3 player in the car!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

God Bless

looks like this isn't such a hot deal then? if somebody can confirm, that'd be great. i'm really interested in getting one... either i go completely basic like this, or all out and get and in-dash pioneer.

I don't understand how this thing could only have 8-bit color. That would look like crap!!!
Must be an error.

I want to know what the quality is on the screen for movies...

8 bit color is fine for a small screen like this. If you want to see, just change your monitor setting to 256 colors and watch a DVD with PowerDVD or something. Very "watchable" for in the car.

The monitor will also work with gaming consoles. Just get an AC converter off Ebay. This is hot if you need to keep the kids quiet during a long road trip.

I was wondering if there was anyway you could hook that LCD up to a pc. I need a small portable monitor to just display text. Could it be done easily?
Thanks for the help

TC 61 - easy...only if your PC has Composite out (yellow plug). If not you need a scan converter and that's gonna be expensive ($100) and bulky.

As someone who has an computer serving as an mp3 playing and gps navigation with a 5.6" TFT LCD in my car..

I can say you'll need a computer with NTSC composite video out, commonly labeled "tv-out". My computer has it integrated on the mobo, but you can get an addon PCI card which will do this, or an external converter that will convert from VGA to NTSC. I recommend the PCI card route though -- better yet, just make sure the system you get for your car has onboard tv-out.

I use an MSI 6215. That comes with a compact little book-pc style case. Some people who build their own cases use the Shuttlew SV24, which is another good choice (but it's just a mobo).

Oh yeah. A 5.6" TFT NTSC LCD is crappy for working with text. Unless it's like 48point at 800x600, it will be very difficult to read.

If you want to read fine text (paragraphs, web pages, documents, etc.) you'll want a VGA display, not an NTSC one.

TC61,

You can use a trident video card with Composite Video out. I have been using one for a year with w98 SE to display PC on my TV. I use other input of the TV to play DVD using H+.

Here is link to the card that I use.

This thing looks sweet! It would be a great toy. Haha I could play some PS2 on the road. Can anybody seriously recommend this thing? Anybody actually have one?

Does anyone know if the LCD screen has a inverse or flip picture function ??. I would like to mount it unside down on my passenger side sunvisor.

Also can the bracket tilt at angles ?

yeah, just did that with the dvd player that was bundled with my video card, but can someone confirm that the dvd player isn't overlayer a its own screen on top of the windows desktop setting?? the only reason I ask is that I don't think I was able to tell the difference b/w 32 bit color and 8 bit (dvd player), but windows and everything else looks like crap with in 8-bit color....

Contrapasta is right, DVD players play through an overlay.
If you want to really see what 8-bit color is like, set your screen to 256-color and open a photo.
