Sorry if this idea is repost, but....
Can you honestly imagine the reaction of your fiancee (or wife even) when she eventually asks about the "diamond?" Like "Honey, do you have the cert papers for the diamond?" "Well, dear, that's not ACTUALLY a diamond, you see, it's a fake 'Gemesis gem' that cost me 5 bucks online..."

Mr. Shite meet Mr. Fan

Man-made diamonds for industrial and tech use? Sure. For jewelery? No.
If society can convert women to be willing to accept fakes as the real deal, than yes do it. But until then, guys.... trust me, don't offer the fiancee a fake diamond. You WILL regret it!

If it is made of carbon just like a diamond is today, how is it a fake? Just because it is produced faster and cheaper. If your woman is that set on material things, you may want to look elsewhere.

Your parents are minions of DeBeers?

I am sure we could find something in your life which really is deplorable. So why don't we just leave this name calling?

Who cares about the consumer jewelry diamond market. This is a major technological advance!
And how much do you want to bet that this U.S. company, like so many others of a strategic nature, has already been infiltrated by Chinese government spies?

Since the manufacturing process comes from Russia. And the russians has sold everything, including their mother, to make a buck, you can bet the Chinese already has it.

man, imagine. Diamonds with "made in China" stickers on them. They'll be free, after coupon, MIR, PM. Of course, that's YMMV.

Was it produced by the earth? Did it take as long as a diamond? Is it rare? No.No.No.
So it's fake.

Also, I'm not saying MY woman in particular... MOST women out there, guaranteed, would consider their mate a 'CHEAP@SS' if he presented a man made gem. Trust.

Perhaps ... but why should someone go $3k, $4k, $5k into debt if it isn't necessary? What of the saying, "you can't buy love?" Isn't that exactly what De Beers is selling? It's not hard to get $3k into a ring. Why not buy an equally-nice ring at a lower price and use the rest for a downpayment on a house or something? If a woman looks at a guy who does that and considers him a cheapa$$, then she's the one with the problem. He's got his head screwed on straight and he shows some financial responsibility.

Besides, I'm willing to bet that the people who spend the most on rings are the same ones who usually wind up in divorce court fighting over money.

I thought you might find this portion of the article interesting:

=================================

"If you go into a florist and buy a beautiful orchid, it's not grown in some steamy hot jungle in Central America," he says. "It's grown in a hothouse somewhere in California. But that doesn't change the fact that it's a beautiful orchid."

"Do you care that it's not from De Beers?" I ask.

"De Beers?" he says. "Nobody cares if it's from De Beers. My clients just want a nice diamond."

=================================

Great article! Thanks for the link OP!

It's not hard to get $3k into a ring.

How about half that? That diamond doesn't HAVE to be 1 carat, either. If the woman has to have one of this size/weight.... then there just might be a problem.

Hey, I'm all about saving, being cheap, modest, whatever.. but, if you wanna look chump tell you're woman you bought her a man-made gem, that's all I'm sayin. Play it safe is what I talkin' bout!

BTW, these are MY honest opinions, not to rip on the OP..

From Dictionary.com

di·a·mond ( P ) Pronunciation Key (d-mnd, dmnd) n.
1. An extremely hard, highly refractive crystalline form of carbon that is usually colorless and is used as a gemstone and in abrasives, cutting tools, and other applications.
2. A piece of jewelry containing such a gemstone.

Note that it says nothing about being "man-made" versus "natural" or anything about being made over a million years.

hookitup, so if we put two diamonds in a bag, one is man made and one is earth made and then told you to pick out the natural one, how would you pick it out?

The whole point here is that, as someone pointed out above diamonds are not a rare commodity. They are very abundant and kept artificially scarce. I would be inclined to say you would look like a chump buying a diamond for a hugely inflated price. Your thought process makes no sense, you would rather buy a ring for $1500 as opposed to the exact same thing for $300 or $400. DeBeers has a grip on your mind.

Here's a question for you guys.

I do agree that diamond is not a rare gem. Is there a gem that is truly rare?

slikk, i think that both rubies and emeralds are truly rare in nature. i'm not sure what they cost compared to diamonds but i know they are both expensive. diamonds just get all the ca$h because of debeers ruthless and brilliant marketing/business strategy. fyi, 100 years ago diamonds weren't actually that big a deal and rarely used for engagement/wedding rings. that is a result of debeers marketing. i read a really interesting article on this somewhere, wish i could remember where.

and i agree with the many posters here - debeers sucks, they are ruthless and cruel and manipulative, it'll be a great day when these technoligical innovations can crush them! up with the geeks! geeks rule!

Your thought process makes no sense

IF you want to present a Russian-made (or Chinese maybe) fake diamond for your woman go right ahead. But, don't be a d!ck to me and say my thinking is wrong. Got it jerkoff? I said in my last post that my points were MY opinions.

So when you go shopping, and they show you your preciouse, rare, $1500 stone and say "This one?" or "This one over here is indistinguishable from a earth-made diamond, it is also a "real" diamond but it cost $1200 less" "Which would you like?"

You'd pick the more expensive one?

Did you even read the entire article? (completely separate question btw.)

Fine, I'll say it. If you think a "natural" one is better than a "synthetic" one ... then you got issues. Maybe it's time for a head exam.

But, c'mon, those are FAKE orchids ... wait, they're not. Neither are these diamonds.

Rubies and Emeralds are also diamonds, except that they have a red or green tint. If they can make a clear or yellow one, I am sure they can make red or green ones as well.

You are really quite dumb. IIIII don't care about the diamond, but if propose to YOUR girl, she will be expecting a real diamond, all carbon arguments aside. Again, its not about me. Why put the mental pressure on her? 'Cause you know that thoughts will be running through her head about who you really are. Her expectations are nice diamond. She gets well, a CHEAP diamond. For as much as you guys think that she would be OK with a $300 diamond---- you are WRONG! ASK ANY WOMAN- take a poll. Guaranteed results of: $1500 wins.

Just a theory and question to pose:

1. Physically and Chemically speaking, a diamond is a diamond no matter who makes it, just as a Honda Civic (example) is still Honda Civic no matter it's made in Japan, America, or Mexico?

2. Can we thank the Diamond craze to the ingenous Marketing division of DeBeers, as Diamonds really aren't that rare, but supply is strictly controlled.

And in my opinion, diamonds are covered in blood. It's like a bloodbath down there in those mines. If you want a good deal on an earth made one, go to Amsterdamn, they don't care for diamonds like we do in the US. You can even get some other earth made stuff there too!

Alright, let's stop the which is better debate between natural and synthetic diamonds already. This debate can go on and on. I've seen these in past threads. Let's just stick to the facts.

If you want a good deal on an earth made one, go to Amsterdamn, they don't care for diamonds like we do in the US. You can even get some other earth made stuff there too!

What other earth made stuff do you mean?
