Better stake your claim, colonization/mining/etc, to one now. I shall name these planets Vulcan, Betazed, Romulus, Qo'noS, and Cardassia.

(CNN) -- Are we alone in the universe? Findings by NASA's Kepler space telescope are making that seem less likely.

NASA scientists have announced Kepler has spotted five planets about the size of Earth, orbiting stars in our galaxy.

These planets are orbiting in what is known as the habitable zone, which puts them at a distance from their suns where liquid water could exist. Liquid water is a key ingredient for life to form.

"In a generation we have gone from extraterrestrial planets being a mainstay of science fiction, to the present, where Kepler has helped turn science fiction into today's reality," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden.

The Kepler science team also announced the telescope found six planets, all larger than Earth, orbiting a single sun-like star.

That star is some 2,000 light years from Earth.

To date, the telescope has detected more than 1,200 planet candidates. The fact that so many planets have been found in the Milky Way galaxy "suggests there are countless planets orbiting sun-like stars in our galaxy," said William Borucki, Kepler's principal investigator.

Kepler does not actually see the planets themselves. The telescope sees tiny decreases in light from the stars as planets transit across their suns.

The five Earth-sized planets are orbiting stars cooler and smaller than our sun, and further analysis is still necessary to officially confirm they are planets.

2,000 light years away so we'll probably never be able to study those planets closely.

Not to rain on your parade, but if these planets are capable of sustaining life then the no doubt already have life forms of some sort on them. They may be microbes or sentient beings. If microbes would we colonize the planet and kill off those forms of life than are not amenable to humans? If there are sentient beings they may be far behind or ahead of us in technology. What then? Do we make contact and hope for the best?

Yes, it's unfortunate that the universe is so vast and the speed limit is so slow. The only solution is to fix our crappy lifespans.

We need faster than light travel now. Evidence suggests that some of these worlds have WMDs that could be used against us. A preemptive strike is the order of the day.

Are you assuming they are hostile aliens? How do you know they're not just like us? Granted, we're not pillars of morality, but we're also insanely curious too. I saw make contact if possible, it'll happen one way or another regardless.

Edit - If its just microbial life, humans haven't exactly been successful at wiping out any microbe.

Or develop valid FTL travel. May seem impossible, but remember many people throughout history have said many things were impossible only to be proven wrong time and time again.

So we can start sending mining colonies off-worlds to collect acid-spitting aliens?

who needs a speed limit when we can warp space around to move through space faster than light by moving space itself, or create wormhole warp gates

I have heard things like this for years, still nothing seems to come of it. Every time my scifi side pops a bit of a semi though.
