They sent me the wrong kind also. I just ordered the 64mb simm.

We use about a dozen of the HL-1440's.

From personal experience:

1. The standard 2 megs memory is NOT enough.

2. An additional 8 megs is enough to make the printer work just fine.

3. The printer takes standard 72 pin RAM from older computers. You can use 8 meg, 16 meg or 32 meg memory in either FPM or EDO, whatever you might have lying around. (Some people reported using 64 megs, but I have not tried this.)

4. For best price on RAM, checkout PriceWatch. Look for the memory links to the bottom right. Best current prices are $4.00 - $6.00 SHIPPED.

If you use 64mb chip, will the printer read as 64 or 32mb?

Doh.

Please, can someone tell me how to query the printer for its memory? I installed a 16 MB stick, but still can't print at 1200 dpi!

Added later, guess others might have the same question.

If using Linux, make a file that contains:

[Ctrl] [P] [Esc]%-12345X@PJL <cr><lf>
@PJL INFO MEMORY <cr><lf>
[Ctrl] [P] [Esc]%-12345X <cr><lf>

name it foo.pjl

execute the command

$ cat foo.pjl > /dev/usb/lp0

To see the results,

$ more /dev/usb/lp0

which for me gave:
@PJL INFO MEMORY
TOTAL=9407756
LARGEST=9407756


My problem -- it was an 8MB simm, not 16MB. I guess I need a little more to get 1200 dpi?

To check installed memory in an HL-1440 (Windows system)

Go to PRINTERS folder.

Find HL-1440. Right-click and choose PROPERTIES.

Click on the ACCESSORIES tab. You will see an entry for PRINTER MEMORY.

Alternatively, go to the SUPPORT tab. Click on PRINT CONFIG. On the sheet that prints out, RAM SIZE can be found on the third row (upper right).
