He apparently asked the wrong forum, because any good one would have told him not to load the car up with 4 people, for more speed and less carnage if something went wrong.

Wow.

The driver's thread on M5Board.com

M5froth I completley understand where you are coming from assuming that I am irresponsible..that is definetly understandable. I do sometimes make bad decisions but I am young and I do drive safe and I will not endanger the lives of others..and I hope you are not under the impression that I am the one to brag, I have never been that way and never will. Plus I will have pictures up asap with me in the pictures. I have no reason to lie buddy.

At least he didn't kill anyone who wasn't dumb enough to get into a car with him.

that sucks, both for the car and for everyone in it.

but really, what would cause an M5 to fly off a broad flat surface like that? they're designed to CRUISE over 100mph. underinflated tire? driver error? passenger interference? substances?

edit: and WHY would ANYONE give an 18-year-old an M5? I'm rather jealous that someone my age got to drive one, but I know that I am NOT capable of handling such a machine at those speeds!

article says the car belonged to his father, they were driving on an elevated runway 80ft high and ran off the end of it.

As strange as it sounds, the M5 is actually a safer car than something about as fast like a Mustang or F-Body. Though the M5 is more costly (obviously), its safety tends to be pretty good. Yes, it's fast, but not appreciably faster than many of the vehicles in the hands of highschool kids today.

100 mph isn't exactly an uncontrollable speed. It's fast for most cars, but an m5 should be more than capable of handling it. This kid was either the worst driver in the world, or intentionally trying to kill himself.

He just left a party before the crash. I think it's reasonable to wonder if he wasn't 100% in control of his faculties.

The new M5's are going to be considerably faster than a Mustang or F-Body... The current M5 is clawing into super car territory.

The new M5's have been doing mid to high 4 sec 0-60 and high 12 second quarter mile, bone stock. A run of the mill Mustang GT (not even GT500) does the 0-60 in low 5 seconds, and mid 13 second quarter mile, also stock. SBC based F-bodies are a bit faster than that, stock.

All in all, yes there's a speed & quickness difference (at least stock to stock), but the difference isn't huge. Heck, there are plenty of highschoolers running around in EVOs and STIs, which are right there in speed.

Valuation aside, I'd say a kid is safer in an M5 than a Mustang, F-Body, EVO, STI, or many other choices.

No argument there at all.

I'm just saying it's probably safer in that than the multitudes of almost as fast cars that lots and lots of highschoolers across the US drive.

100 mph in an M5 in good conditions without traffic around is not unsafe, period. People do that on the autobahn all the time and other highways and are perfectly fine. Obviously, something bad happened here. Maybe car failure, probably driver error, etc.

It sucks most for the other 4 but sucks for him, too. We've all (most of us) done some very stupid things as kids but managed to live through them.

Police said the victims were friends and had just left a party before the crash.

Lets put 2 and 2 together, there was probably alcohol involved, possibly not in the driver but at least in some of the people egging him on. I'd put my money on that everyone in the car were under the influence of either alcohol and/or drugs. Even in darkness, usually people relize that the airstrip ends after about a mile.

Loos like over the course of the runway he probably got up to 155 and didn't leave enough room to stop before the edge and flew off while still going 100+

That seems the most logical case. Even if the strip was lit it's hard to gauge distance at night, & if it wasn't lit then he was just asking for something like this to happen.
