Has anyone tried it yet? Astraweb maxes out my connection at 50 megabits... If ThunderNews doesn't come close, then I'm not going for it...

So, this means if you sign up during the special and don't cancel, you will always get $5 for unlimited? If so, that sounds pretty hot. I think the unlimited service normally goes for $22 and includes 50 connections and SSL.

I just signed up for a looksey. Seems to be comparable in speed to my AstraWeb account. One thing to note. The servers you get assigned to if you pay by PayPal appears to have less newsgroups. They warn you of this as you sign up. WTF is with this? I'll probably cancel after the month is up.

Astraweb charges $10 for 25-gig or $25 for 180-gig and never expires. Thundernews is a good deal, but i don't want to be billed month to month if i don't use it.

Here's another one:
Unlimited Usenet - $5.10 lifetime with Newsdemon.com
A coupon code is required. Coupon code is: blackfriday2010

I'll be checking this thread to see if there's more info, as this is, as they say, relevant to my interests. The red flag I'm seeing on this is how they give you less groups if you use Paypal, according to Goobee upthread. Why would they do this? To pressure you to use a less secure payment method?

This says 22$ when I click the link.
I go to the main home page and it looks like the very basic is about 11$

to pressure you to use a more private payment method. paypal would give up their records to the police faster then rosie odonell would last on a runway.

Call me a newb all you want, but how the heck do newsgroups work? Everything I've read online has been VERY vague.

Google is going to drop usenet soon, so perhaps it is good time to enjoy last days of usenet.

Looks like the deal on the unlimited is sold out. They still have $5/mo but on non-unlimited. Still, pretty good for 75GB/mo. I probably should have jumped on the unlimited while it was available, but had to take off for dinner, and then I forgot about it until now. Here's their other deals:

It is like a vast worldwide forum with over 100,000 subforums. Instead of using a web browser you use a specialized news reader. Think of it as forums that you read like offline email, complete with attachments and a lot of spam.

Should I pay the 11 bucks for the Astra unlimited is it that much better, or is the $8 dollar deal for newsgroups good enough??
