Giganews is good but the most expensive. They do have the highest retention too but not by enough to care. There prices rise for some of their plans next years but that is a good thing actually.

You can get Giganews level unlimited per a month service for cheaper if you must be on Giganews servers. $9.99 per a month to $19.95 for unlimited plans.

Giganews also has the most groups last time I checked versus Astra, Binverse, and Thunder...last time I check about 6 months ago.

Am I reading this right that the unlimited plan is now $10.49/mo and they allow two simultaneous ip's?

Edit: Never mind. Unlimited accounts are 1 IP only. 2 would be perfect.

Does everyone else still use actual newsgroups? Maybe I'm just lazy but I just bought a membership for two NZB sites for $10 total and don't worry about. Hooked them to SABnzb, just click bookmark, and my server downloads it. Hell I can do it from my phone. Nothing like thinking of something on the go and having it sitting on my server when I get home.

Uhhh... you're still using "newsgroups" (both the service and the individual groups on usenet itself). I don't get your point at all. Nobody is pulling down the headers of the groups. But you still NEED the groups on your service provider to download from them.

I think you don't fully understand how NGs work,

But yes. SABnzbd is great. Try out Sickbeard too if you like TV shows

Evidently I don't. So if my provider(usenetserver, astra, giga, whatever) doesn't support all the groups and I download an NZB that pulls from said group I can't download the file?

Sickbeard looks, well sick. Setting up now.....

Correct.
Think of the group as a "folder" if you like.
If your Usenet providere doesn't have that "folder" (newsgroup) then you can' dload the files. Granted, I've been using Usenet for pretty much forever, and I just use Astranews (due to price) I have yet to queue something up in a group that my provider doesn't carry. Often things are cross posted to several groups, meaning its posted to alt.b.x and alt.b.y and alt.b.z all at the same time. So if you provider doesn't have alt.b.x, but does have alt.b.z, you're A-Ok.

Sickbeard (been using since betas) is the best thing ever for grabbing TV shows. Plain and simple. Add a show, add the quality you want it in and blammo. Great for filling in episodes you may be missing from your collection too. Forums are very good for questions and answers too. ENJOY!

Ok, 3rd post. Everyone is saying 'its back' but it never appeared to be there. 17$ a month for the 75gb plan.

I currently use easynews and they have a kick butt web interface but I pay 15$ a month!
Can quit anytime and would like to for 5$ a month!

hmmm $11 for Astra?
Why am I paying $39/3 months for Astra?

I subscribe to a AstraWeb's block account and carefully manage my downloads. With Thunder's $5/month unlimited plan, it was worth giving a try. From what I've seen so far with Thunder, it's missing a bunch of my favorite groups. I won't be leaving AstraWeb any time soon.

Yeah. I'd like to get a group listing from each, toss into excel and see what is all missing.

OK - so what newsgroups do you guys subscribe to?

I don't "subscribe" to any group. Or did you mean what news-service provider do I use? If that's the case, I use Astraweb. I've used them all over the past 15 years at some point or another. Astra just ends up being the best price for the best service IMO.

As for "groups" I think most people nowadays just use nzbs to dload stuff. There are several websites out there (some pay some free) that allow you to search for and dload nzbs for binaries you want. I find it hard to imagine anyone is actually pulling down and sifting through headers anymore.

If you're talking about actual stuff that usenet was invented for (discussions, text etc etc.... no clue).

Thanks, looks awesome.

Looks awesome because it IS awesome. Beyond awesome.
It's entirely changed the way I use Usenet and XBMC. Flawless.
Midgetspy (the lead programmer) is super cool and responsive too.
If you use it, please donate a few pennies to him.

I use Astraweb's unlimited DSL plan for $11 a month... http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html

"No Speed Limits
No Download Limits
Exactly the same as Unlimited DSL Plan
You will pay $11 for every month as long as your subscription remains active. We will not raise the price." 838+ days retention and rising. 20 connections. I use the SSL servers and max my 20Mb connection out. Great completion rates. I used to have Giganews but Astraweb is just as good for me and a lot cheaper.
