According to Vehix anyway:

Overall I'd say the choices are not so much underrated as they are outgunned. The Veracruz is not only in a class with stiff competition it's burdened with a Korean name plate known for econoboxes and 10 year warranties not big cushy SUVs. The Xterra is competing with some legends, anybody looking for a serious off road vehicle is going to be shopping Jeep or Toyota. Although they may have a good product, Nissan hasn't done a very good job of generating hype over the last several years, when the Xterra was launched they had some clever commercials but honestly I thought the platform had been discontinued a couple years ago. I wasn't aware VW made the CC, it may be underrated because it hasn't had a big marketing push behind it. As far as the CTS and Explorer, they have been well reviewed and are favorably rated, I'm not sure why the author considers them underrated.
Just one more article to add to the suspicion that editors pick cars for these lists by throwing darts.
