I've been a mod on an 'import' site for several years, and this 'best oil/oil filter' thing is always the source of much debate, sooooo...
Let me give you MY opinion, based on research - reading, writing, cutting filters apart (new and used), blah, blah, blah.
First of all Castrol Syntec is NOT sythetic oil, in the catholic sense. It's regular old mineral oil that's been heated to extremely high temperatures, in order to crack the molecules.
It THAT sense, sure it's has been tinkered with, and can be claimed to be synthetic, e.g. not natural - but, in fact, it nothing but a cracked hydrocarbon product.
I don't suggest running it! It won't HURT anything, but it's a total waste of your money...
Instead, I suggest running Mobil 1 Synthetic - which is a TRUE synthetic! If it's good enough for a 8000 HP Top Fuel Dragster, and an 18000 RPM F1 Racer, it's good enough for your grocery getter! Since this isn't a car forum, I'll just leave it at that... Take my word for it.
Secondly, IMHO, the best oil filter made (based on testing in real world conditions) is the Purolator PureONE! They list for, like, $14 - but, I've been buying them for years - online or at Pep Boys for around $6.00, give or take.
Lastly, although you didn't ask...
If you're running a manual tranny/transaxle... I STRONGLY suggest running
REDLINE MTL or
REDLINE MT-90.
These are TRUE synthetic also - around $10/qt at your local speed shop - but worth every penny!
To wrap this up, when/if you start running Mobil 1 Synthetic motor oil with a Purolator PureONE oil filter, and Redline MTL/MT-90 in your tranny - engine/transmission wear will go to practically '0' - and, what's that worth?
