I just came back from Autozone with 5 quarts of Syntec 5W-30 and a premium Mobile 1 filter for $25.99 total. This special has been on-going since early Feb but ends March 5th. The filter normally runs $10 while Syntec usually runs about $6 a quart. This deal saves you approximately $16.

Here's a link:

Good deal. I think Castrol Syntec is usually 6.49 a quart at my autozone.

0W-30 German stuff is the best stuff you can find on the shelves.

I have been using Amsoil lately. I have always liked Quaker State and Castrol though. I'll have to pass by tomorrow on my way home.

SEMI-OFF-TOPIC: From what I understand, nowhere on a bottle of Mobil One does it say %100 Synthetic. I hear that it only states 'Fully Synthetic'. It might seem to be the same thing, but it isn't. Perhaps you should (I know I will) check the label on this Castrol.

++

I'd go so far as to say 0w30 or don't take advantage of the deal.

What you're probably talking about is the differences between group III (3) synthetics vs group iv (4) synthetics.

Most standard store brands are group iii synthetics, while there are more advanced, and generally harder to find group iv synthetics. For John Q. Cardriver and his standard car/mini-van/SUV, he will never know/notice the difference between the two oil types, making either one a fine choice for him.

Although this deal is already over but thanks. Keep deals like this coming. Sometime ago, Autozone also had 5 qts of synthetic Mobil1 with a filter for the same price. I jumped on it without thinking.

Can anyone recommend a good filter that's not too expensive? Also, do all filters come in standard sizes, or do you have to match the make and model of your car? I always had oil place installed whatever they had, now I want something better.

I've been a mod on an 'import' site for several years, and this 'best oil/oil filter' thing is always the source of much debate, sooooo...

Let me give you MY opinion, based on research - reading, writing, cutting filters apart (new and used), blah, blah, blah.

First of all Castrol Syntec is NOT sythetic oil, in the catholic sense. It's regular old mineral oil that's been heated to extremely high temperatures, in order to crack the molecules.

It THAT sense, sure it's has been tinkered with, and can be claimed to be synthetic, e.g. not natural - but, in fact, it nothing but a cracked hydrocarbon product.

I don't suggest running it! It won't HURT anything, but it's a total waste of your money...

Instead, I suggest running Mobil 1 Synthetic - which is a TRUE synthetic! If it's good enough for a 8000 HP Top Fuel Dragster, and an 18000 RPM F1 Racer, it's good enough for your grocery getter! Since this isn't a car forum, I'll just leave it at that... Take my word for it.

Secondly, IMHO, the best oil filter made (based on testing in real world conditions) is the Purolator PureONE! They list for, like, $14 - but, I've been buying them for years - online or at Pep Boys for around $6.00, give or take.

Lastly, although you didn't ask...

If you're running a manual tranny/transaxle... I STRONGLY suggest running REDLINE MTL or REDLINE MT-90.

These are TRUE synthetic also - around $10/qt at your local speed shop - but worth every penny!

To wrap this up, when/if you start running Mobil 1 Synthetic motor oil with a Purolator PureONE oil filter, and Redline MTL/MT-90 in your tranny - engine/transmission wear will go to practically '0' - and, what's that worth?

I converted both my BMW 7's over to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF.

It's a multi-step process, especially with an older transmission however.

The synthetic ATF loosens the gunk that builds up in an automatic transmission and can clog oil passageways and filters. The best way is to use 10% synthetic with the first change, 20% with the next change, 30% , then 50%, 75%, then full synthetic.
Some people believe doing it that way is over-kill, but with the cost of automatic transmissions, I think it makes sense...and BTW, a NEW filter with every fluid change. Also, most A/T's you only change 1/3 or so of the fluid when you drain the pan, leaving the rest in the torque converter, so even when you're at 100% every change, unless you pull the transmisson and converter, you never actually get 100% synthetic.

You should use a trans flushing machine, or if you're cheap like me, unhook the lines at the radiator and pour new fluid in at approximately the rate that the idling car spits out the old. kinda tricky though.

Sorry!

I admit complete ignorance when it comes to slush boxes...

The only auto tranny we have in the household is my wife's Mopar SUV, and we run...

VALVOLINE ATF+4

Pricey little booger - $7/qt. - but it's officially licensed by Chrysler for use in Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep trannys!

It's a TRUE synthetic too, of course...

Heh!

THIS I do know, for sure...

The way you drain the oil from a torque converter, with no drain plug, is to drill a hole in it - then, seal the hole with a pop-rivet and fiber washer.

Read about this in a Cadillac factory service manual, of all places... complete with pictures!

WOW, this is not the correct site to advise deal seekers on auto transmission. You are likely to prompt a do gooder to trash his transmission with motor oil or inspire him to incorrectly change the muffler bearings. Muffler Bearing

FYI, Always replace your 710 cap after replacing your Oil

But seriously, unless you know what your doing, dont mess your trans fluid. Most new vehicles are fill for life transmissions (100k+ mi).

Kobb, I think you're low on blinker fuid, I can get you a great deal on that before your turn signals stop working.

BTW that site is great, I knew the blinker fluid one from before (I used to be a mechanic and that was one of the jokes, we never used it on a real customer of course). But most of those, I never heard of--LOL@cross drilled brake lines!

You know...

I love AutoZone!

I was over there last night, trying to get a core deposit back, on a starter - but they said, sorry, no returns after 10:00 PM.

Hello?!?! What difference does it make?

So tonight, I was ready for bear, but the whole place was being run by women...

The gal that did the return had to wait for 'Peppermint Pattys' (the manager) password. Then, they whispered...

"Pssst. Get up to the counter before 'April' leaves!"

Bwahahahaha! They roared...

Inside joke, I guess.

When I got to the counter, I leaned over and said, "Are you April?"

"Yeah, why?"

Cause I'm supposed to get here before you leave...

She looked at me with squinty eyes. "I don't leave 'til 11..."

I said, I dunno... um...

Hey, are you from Tennesee?

"No!"

Well, you're the only '10' I see in here!

LoL!

That put a smile on her face.

Ah, AutoZone...

Pep Boys isn't nearly as fun!
