Was playing Project Cars today and my PC just restarted by itself. I thought it could be the new GTX 980ti i just installed a few days back but it's running at 75 degrees loaded so i don't think it is the card. Could it be my old Corsair PS???

Graphics cards don't cause the PC to restart, so you can rule that out.

It does sound like a power supply problem. I'm no expert, but normally I'd expect restarting to occur when overpower protection (i.e. too many total watts drawn) or over current protection (i.e. too many amperes drawn from a particular rail) kicks in. This cannot possibly be the case here because we're talking about an 850W unit, not a 500W unit.

But I suppose it's possible that the PSU just hasn't aged well, and for some reason voltages go out of spec at load? Maybe capacitor aging can cause this.

Yeah that's what I'm afraid of. It happened after 45 min of gaming. My total system consumption is around 720 watts when fully loaded. I will try to play a bit more and report back

If over the last 5 years its seen alot of gaming and higher end upgrades/overclocking I'd be pointing fingers at the PSU. Also if you run your PC 24/7 that could play small part on top of the 5 years. I had a system with a mid-high end Enermax thats about 7 years old that slowly wouldn't boot until(I am guessing) was warmed up. Because after several power on attempts it would boot. Replaced it and all was well. Just glad it went that way and not throwing sparks and smoke lol. Had it been a el cheapo it probably would have.

Yes from my experience, investing on a proper PS is the way to go
I don't leave it 24/7 and I game 3/4 times a week for 2 to 4 hours each day. Am at work right now but tonight I'll play a bit more and see what happens. I'll let everyone know what happens.

Just in case it happens again, what unit should I get? What brands are good these days? I really like Corsair, any models you guys recommend?

You measured the 720W with a wattmeter? With 80+ Bronze efficiency, that translates to around 600W of power required by the components... This seems a lot for a PC with just one 980 Ti. Normally, a system with 4770K + 980 Ti should use at most 400W while gaming. Does your overclock really account for that 200W difference?

No, don't have one. I used this page http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator
Is that a no no to calculate approx. wattage?

That calculates a recommended size for the PSU, not how much power is consumed. A ~700W PSU makes sense for your PC, so in that sense it is accurate.

I highly recommend the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 series, they come with a 10 year warranty. It has a single 12V rail (better stability and output) and turns its fan off in ECO mode when it isn't needed. And if you want to splurge, the P2 series is even better in terms of power efficiency.

I saw an issue like yours before. The computer would turn off after like 30 minutes of being online, did not really matter what was being done on the computer. We replaced the PSU, and the issue went away. Might've been PSU overheating or something?

Before you go replacing the PSU, Id make sure the overclock is totally stable(and not causing it)hard to do if the PSU is the culprit. Did you look in OS to see what caused the reboot? I forget what part you have to look in.

The EVGA price's can not be beat for a PSU.
