i have a lite-on 812s@832s right now. is there any way of testing is it will burn my 4x TDK DVD+r's at perhaps 8x without actually burning something (like software, so i dont have to make anymore coasters)? i know if might sound like a stupid question but worth taking a shot if it saves me another coaster.

ah, you're right... Here's some quotes from the 25pack's reviews. The 50pack didn't have any reviews at all.

I got the first package and there were visible defects around the edges of all 25 discs. The discs would burn fine but then freeze and skip near the end when played. I returned it for a 2nd spindle and experience the same thing.

I've burned about 9 DVD+RWs from my spindle. I've had two failed burns. The burns failed and the disc cannot be erased. I've tried multiple programs and with no success to erase these bad discs. My hardware is LG GSA-4081B with latest firmware (v1.04). The other 7 discs have had no problems. Using DVDinfoPro2 I found the disc media info to be listed as Ricoh.
I would not buy these again, because they are unreliable. The quality of these DVD+RWs varies too much to use for important data archives.

I will try to give the result of these Ritek DVD+-R here.

First this is second time I ordered DVD-R with Amazon in same cake box. The result is pretty good. I can burn 8x in both Nero and CloneDVD with NEC2500A. The scan result from KProbe is under PI=50 and PO=4. The media code is Ritek G04. This is pretty good disc and pretty cheap too.

The DVD+R I ordered the first time both 4x and 8x. The media code for 4x is Ritek R03 rev 002 and 8x is Ritek R03 rev. 001. This is not so very good media. Both 4x and 8x can burn 8x in both NERO and CloneDVD but the KProbe scan goes over PI = 300 PO = 5 (not much different for 6X burn in NERO). If burn @ 4x then The scan come out at PI max - 80 and PO = 2. I would stay away from Ritek/Ridata brand for DVD+R. The old RicohJPR001 I have can burn at 8x and KProbe scan was only under PI 50.

Hint: There are a lot of ppl said that Ritik R03 (DVD+R @8x) when first came out is not very good at its speed (8x) alot of burner manufaturors test and qualified it at only 4x for their burners. As you can see 4x and 8x are same media code R003 but 8x is rev. 001 and 4x is rev.002 (newer revision but same media code). So if you decided to buy, don't waste your money with 8x like I did just buy 4x and you will actually get the same not-too-good DVD+R.

Good find... i thought i read somewhere that -R's are more compatible with DVD players then +R's, any truth to this?

Newegg lists a 50 pack of Ridata DVD-R's (4x, however) for $33 here

yes they are, and you have to modify your booktype of +R to -R to be more compatible by use of your dvd burner utility such as liteon

DVD+R is a superior format compared to DVD-R's. If you use booktype DVD+R's are more compatible because it's read as a DVD-Rom disc.

Will at 8x DVD+R still burn at 4x on a 4x burner?

Of course, it's certainly not going to burn at 8x.

Of course, it's certainly not going to burn at 8x.

What I'm wondering is why my 8x DVD+Rs are burning at 4x in my 8x burner (NEC ND-2510a)! The vendor I bought them from had them labeled as 8x, although the disks don't have labels on them individually. Is there a setting I can change in my Nero 6 Ultra or maybe a firmware update or something? I'm burning a disk right now with DVD Shrink 3.17, and it's burning at 4x too...

I just started burning another one of these "8x" discs with DVD Shrink. This time I didn't use the "Maximum" speed setting, but specifically chose "8x". However, when the burn started it said that it was burning at 4x because 8x wasn't possible with the supplied disc. I wonder if I was buffaloed by my vendor when they said those are 8x discs. Ah, well, there's only around 21 left... Is there any way I can test the disks to see what speed they are rated at? Some utility?

so sad... got the 8x DVD+Rs and they only burn at 4x on my NEC ND-2500A, even with firmware 1.07, using Nero
They are Ritek R03s
Is there a way I can get them to burn at 8x?

edit: oh wait nevermind, read the customer reviews on Amazon, says I need to use the modified firmware 1.07

There is an unofficial version firmware. I haven't actually tried it yet, since i'm at work.

They say to flash it to Herrie's 1.07 beta5 version

Near as I can make out, all the 1.07 FW are unofficial, all Herrie's and all "beta." However, the beta 5 comes as "highly recommended." Why, I don't know. Anyway, I figure unless I hear otherwise, I'll try beta 5. It appears to have the fullest features in any case. Beta 4 has no DL support, Beta 6 has no bitsetting, DL burning support, and no speeded up media. All those are in beta 5 I believe.

I was able to burn 15 or so dvds @ 8x on a 8x btc(pacific digital), half for file backup the other for movie backups. Now I am getting artifacts on the last 5 burns. Just got some 4x riteks and they burn w/o any artifacts..guess I will be forced to use the 8x's as file backups now.
