That's almost any admission tests. makes up for your low gpa. In my mind if I was on an admission committee and come across a student with a low gpa and very high test scores, I'm thinking either he's smart but was just lazy or he was really good at guessing.

You'd have to have supernatural powers to guess your way into a 34 on the MCAT. The high MCAT/low GPA thing is for slackers who are smart enough for Med school, but what if they slack in Med school? I ask this as one of those slackers.

Well, slackers in college who get good MCAT scores who remain slackers in med school get their ass kicked. I got a 39 on the MCAT, and almost failed out M1 year because I never learned that you should really study for test.

However, slackers in college who get their act together in med school seem to do pretty well. One of the guys in my class when from a stereotypical frat boy to basically the gunner to end all gunners. He packs 2 meals, and studies in the library from 8 AM to midnight.

The MCAT is basically a glorified reading comprehension test, while the first 2 years of medical school is basically a glorified vocabulary test.

well I never meant make up for slackers to walk in.

I'm more along the lines of 3.0 vs. 3.5.

Sure if they slackers its probably habit by now and aren't likely to improve themselves.

I took the MCAT and hated it, had to take it twice since my V/R section was poor. I thought the writing section was worthwhile, and it definitely challenges your critical thinking ability. They really ought to revamp the reading section, it was pretty useless, and here at school there is little use for Hamlet and Co. I have to admit that there are quite a few people here who have trouble communicating with people, that is ESSENTIAL to good doctor-patient relations. If your patient is not happy will he/she come back? Everyone will have to pass the boards (70%), but screening out for super high MCAT scores is a problem. Not only will you get academically super-competent individuals, but some of these people also become egomaniacs. It aggravates me how my classmates talk down nurses and PAs and disregard their opinion. Forget anatomy, having to realize that these individuals will take care of other people is the most painful aspect of medical school.
Props to the dentists, my best friend is finishing up at NYU this year. It turns out that you guys will have better hours and good pay. If any of you wind up practicing in the DC metro area around 2006 or so let me know so we can trade dental/medical care.
If any of you premeds need advice I should be able to help...

Yeah, I've heard of some really good schools (U.S. News ranked above 15) turn down people with 39 MCAT and 4.0 GPAs for whatever reason, and I'm thinking it's for the reasons you just mentioned. We really don't need cocky doctors.

I'm one of those who will be choosing dentistry inspite of good MCAT and sufficient GPA to go to Med School. I looked at it from the perspective of charity begins at home. I'd rather spend time with my family even if my income is less than a successful physician. But I still have until next year to choose medicine if I desire.
