50 feet of 3/4" copper burried in the ground is my new "radiator."

I wanted to switch to water because running 1.9V on air and keeping it quiet has been difficult. But I wanted to do it really cheap and not use any fans.

50 feet 3/4" slightly dented copper pipe: $15.
Eheim 1250, used: $30.
Maze 2, used: $15.
Tubing, fittings & misc: $20.

Here's the pics.

My socket temp today under load was 36C, down from 49C. I just measured the water temp with a laser temp reading gun. I don't know if its accurate for this. But at the inlet barb of the block it reads 18C and the exit barb reads 22C.

My overclock has increased from 220 x 11 to 225 x 11, still at 1.9V.

words escape me at the moment but I have to hand it to you... using nature to cool your pc...

one question though, where do you live ? any chance this thing would freeze ?

I live on the California coast so it doesn't freeze here. Even if we had some feak freezing weather the pipe is burried deep enough not to freeze and its insulated where it is exposed outside.

very nice work but you will kill the chip with 1.9V. is it really worth the extra 55 mhz?

I was at 1.9V on air before this project. The reduced temps increased my overclock without the need to raise the voltage. Everybody has an opinion on what the maximum safe vcore is. I personally feel safe at 1.9V.

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Most excellent ingenuity! Screw the voltage cowards. Overclocking is not for the faint of heart anyway. Kudos!

Combining water-cooling with gardening? Why not indeed
Hmm, copper tubes - opens up lots of possibilities...

LOL... I think this is the craziest overclocking setup I have ever seen. You should sent those pics to a OCers site or Maximum PC.

I really enjoy having ideas and then making them happen. This project has been a lot of fun.

Today my cpu socket temp was 28C under load. I think it was due to a few things. The AS5 is settling in. Also I insulated the tubing where it comes out of the ground to go into the house. But it was also colder today so that may have played a part as well.

It's things like this that make it to Hardocp, Inquirer and sites like that. and then people say "now I have seen everything". Until the next one comes along.

thats really awesome! We just had our first real snow here in Minnesota, and I was thinking freezing too, but cali, hey, why not! Isn't keeping it at presure hard for the pump??

agian, awesome!

Yes I do think the pump is at its limits. Since the water exiting the maze 2 is 4C hotter than the water going in, the circulation is low. A top-notch watercooling system will have maybe .5C difference. I'm going to put in a more powerful pump before I add my gpu block. Someone gave me a Grundfos circulation pump today. I'm going to test it and see how it does.

When I reported the cpu temp of 36C I forgot to mention (or even take into consideration) that I was running 1.95V that first day, experimenting with my overclock. Ever since that first day I've been at 1.9V and 28C has been the highest temp I've seen.

I'll actually thougt about using old dehumidifer parts for a radiator, as in the winter its very cold

Today the water temperature in my system went from 12C this morning, up to 15.8C this afternoon and then back down to 12C tonight. I was running at full load the whole time (prime95). My cpu socket temp went from 28C up to 30C and back down to 29C. So now I know for sure that my watercooling system works well.

Are you going to keep your pump and all your fittings outside? That doesnt seem like a good idea to me. What if a dog came and chewed up your plastic hose. Then you will be screwed. I would just put like a box over it or some piece of art over it to protect it.

Maybe put the pump and hose inside that metal panel. I think that is a really good idea though.

Dude, one thing left for you to hook it up to constant fresh water supply and drill smal holes in the pipe to sprinkle your backyard.

On more serious note. Awesome job.
