The Web site says 16x, so count on 24x burns unless they ship you the newer version. Even for $2 AR, I wouldn't want to chance getting stuck with more 24x discs. I have a 48x burner.

My 16x Fuji's burn fine at 40x. I have heard that some people have problemss with the burning software downshifting, but the discs I have are fine with the speed. I have Smart-Burn turned off.

About 2 weeks ago when they had the TYs at BB for about 4.99 I believe or something, on the outside wrapper of the Fuji TY was a sticker that was stuck over the original wrap that said, "Write speeds up to 40x" (or something along those lines) - apparently they ARE 40x's? I haven't burned one of those CDs yet to be able to tell you, unfortunately.

Try going to BB B&M and see if they have those spindles with the sticker or label that says Write 40x.

Good luck!

Anyone else having trouble getting to bestbuy.com? I tried a couple of hours ago: nothing. I tried just now: nothing. I've tried their home page as well as the link to the TYs and nothing!

You guys must be pounding their site!

Really? They sold you them for 2 bucks?? Did they limit you? I'd buy like a 100 if mine did that.

Actually, I was at a local BestBuy today with a friend (he had to get a new video card, NOW - if only he had told me about it a few days ago, I would have pointed out the CompUSA 8500LE deal I found here...), anyway, I noticed near the entrance they had a cart with sale items, they had the Fuji's (made in Japan), marked ~$12 after instant rebate/discount, with a $10 MIR, so $2 after all rebates.

So the $12 price is not online-only, B&M has it too. I suppose YMMV, depending on the cluefulness of the store in question. (Btw, $12 out the door, for 50 good-quality 80min CDRs, is pretty decent. Especially for those of us that hate rebates.)

Edit: all the spindles were labeled as "40X". This was in MA.

Okay, so I bought two 50-packs of Imation 40x at CompUSA Friday night. They were $2.99 after rebate. Now that I see this thread, I checked and they say "Made in Taiwan". Should I take them back and get these? Is there that big a difference? I never burned much before, so I don't know much about them. But I'm building a PC with a new TDK 40x, so I think I'll start going through them a lot more often now .

So does Imation = suck?

I called the Fuji rebate line about a few weeks back to bug them about my rebate (was at 14 weeks and counting). While I was talking with them, I asked and they confirmed that rebates from the different stores and different times were considered different promotions so yes, you could e.g. buy one pack from Best Buy this week, CompUSA the next, CC and Best Buy the following week, and each rebate would be considered unique and different. Of course there's the limit 1 per rebate but they usually have 2 or 3 of these CD-R promotions each month between the major retailers.

Imations don't necessarily suck. They about on par with the generics, but the top coat is pretty decent.

Imation CDRs have served me very well. I've burnt about 200 of these and have had maybe 2 coasters. The coasters only happened because I burnt the 16X discs at higher speeds. LOL

I picked up 2 spindles at B&M BB here in Buffalo.... they are 48X FujiFilm made in Japan but they don't have a screw top... are they still Taiyo Yudens? How can I check? Anyway for $5.90 after tax and rebate I get 100 48X cdrs... I won't complain either way.

I had the same experience as MaDHaVoK-no spindle top, clearly labeled Made in Japan & 48X when buying at Best Buy in West Hartford, CT. Interestingly, marked on shelf "As Advertised" at $11.99 and rang up that way, but are in the flyer at $14.99.

Just went to my local BB in Tampa (Citrus Park), they only had one TY (screw top) left, so snatched that. The rest were all regular spindles, with the twist covers. Seems that is the case in a number of stores nationwide. It also did ring up $11.99 + tax. I wonder why the flyer mispriced it.

First of all, unless you have 2 home addresses you are having the rebates sent to, the rebate form specifically says: Limit of one rebate per household or address. If you've picked up 2 for the same rebate address, only one can receive rebate.

Secondly, to answer your question, my understanding is that if there is no screw top, they are not Taiyo Yudens. In addition the program thawolfman listed, you can also use Nero to check your CD. It's under Recorder->Medium Info then hold SHIFT while you hit refresh. You will see the brand (CMC Magnetics, Taiyo Yuden, etc.)

varta1.com
the batch I ordered during last sale had no screw tops

I can see why the author no longer supports cdr identifier
it crashes every machine I try to install it on-seems to conflict with everything

First... I have 2 addresses.... home and school.. I also bought them seperate.

Secondly I used CD I dentifier.... and the 48X Fujifilms without the screw top are Taiyo Yudens according to CDR Identifier... they are also made in japan.
To correct your statement
if there is no screw top, they are not Taiyo Yudens.
Just bc they don't have a screw top doesn't mean they are not Taiyo Yudens.

Did not know that!

Thanks for the headsup! Is it safe to assume ALL Fujis are TYs then?

Thanks!

brought 2 spindles. NO SCREW CAP marked 48x.

100% sure they're TY..

You don't need CD identify software to check ur fujis, just open it up, look at the bottom side of the disc!
If the color is like sky blue-ish... then THEY ARE TYs. all other brand of CDR shows green-white color.
